CAN ANYONE ADVISE HOW TO GET THE WHEELS OFF A SERIES 1 AERO 8 IN YOUR HOME GARAGE? THERE MUST BE A WAY. THE CENTRE HEX NUT IS SO TIGHT SHORT OF TAKING THE CAR TO A SPECIALIST EVERY TIME TO REMOVE THE WHEELS YOU CAN'T EVEN INSPECT OR REPLACE TYRES. I HAVE THE OE TOOLS AND HAVE REMOVED THE GRUB SCREWS BUT REALLY CAN'T SHIFT THE NUT. I KNOW THE NUT HAS TO BE 340NM TORQUE AND HAVE BENT MANY LONG LEVERS, BUT HAVING JUST HAD THE AERO IN AT SPECIALIST TO HAVE THE PADS CHANGED IN A BID TO STOP ENDLESS ANNOYING BRAKE SQUEALING AND WITHIN 4 MILES STILL THE SAME FRUSTRATION IS HIGH!!
Snap on do a fantastic massive torque wrench with an inch drive and since the 911 now use centre lock regularly now this is the tool to use....about £600 though
I converted an original centre lock tool by welding an inch drive socket to it.
Colin, I struggled for a week but an 84 year old retired mechanic managed it easily on my car.. Firstly apply handbrake and put car in gear. Secondly have a second helper applying the footbrake. Thirdly the important bit, is obtain a good heavy short hammer, the heavier the head the better. I have a short sledge. Place the wheel brace on the wheel required, put the lever bar through the holes and as best possible, position the bar as horizontal as you can get it, then observe the rotation for OFF. Now strike the bar about 20cm from the brace head, as you get more confident you can make bigger strikes. The importance of having the car solidly braked with your assistant firmly on the foot brake is important, any give will be energy wasted. The shock never fails. An 84 year old had all my wheels off in minutes. The next IMPORTANT bit is putting them back on, it is vital to get the grub screw fully homethey can look secure but may have not gone fully into the recess, believe me the wheel will come off when you are driving if that grub screw is not in place properly.
Agree 100% with Lightsphere Colin. I slip a 4ft long tube over the socket bar then get a friend to push on it, then whack the socket bar 20-30 cms from the hub with a lump hammer, Never fails! Usually 3 whacks and the shock loosens it. Don't forget to put a very light smear of copper grease on the splines on reassembly!

Usually when people bend bars they are trying to rotate the nuts the wrong way. Most centre wheel nuts are marked with an arrow that shows the correct direction of rotation.
NOPE WAS PUSHING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION...ONCE YOU HAVE SEEN A LOTUS ELAN WHEEL OVERTAKE YOU AT THE SAME TIME YOU ARE DRIVING IT.......YOU NEVER FORGET ABOUT CENTRE SPINNERS!
I also suffered the bent bar syndrome recently when I had to use the standard tool in anger for first time on my GTN. Talked to Lionel Roberts, who machines a range of spinner tools and solved for the spinners on my Jags, sent him the original tool and...magic: a perfect tool with 38mm socket on which I use an extending ratchet/breaker bar (see pics). His prices are very reasonable (sub £50); not sure what his final price for these will be but expect around same as spinners. He is able to machine to fit 2/3-eared spinners/octagonals as well and up for a challenge on anything else - contact: 0794 7712427 or wheelwidget@hotmail.co.uk.
