Had the same problem with my 82 4/4, in the end I added an additional clear plastic fuel filter (bought from Halfords) cut the rubber pipe about 2" from the filter inserted additional one and the misfiring and poor running stopped.

Check the diaphragms on the carb. If you have an electirc choke there should be three of them. I had this problem with my cvh 4/4 and it fixed it. David  Has it got the notorious VV carb? If so I'd get rid and replace with the Weber equivalent.

Like some above, I think it is fuel related. It could be what is known as 'vapor lock' caused by high temperature (mainly). Check if the fuel line runs in a vertical arc somewhere - if so, try to straighten it so no vapors can be trapped. Also try to re-route the fuel line to a cooler area if possible. You can also try to insulate it. There's a lot of material available on the net but probably your local sparepart dealer can help you.

Sounds auto choke fault to me ?
I've had exactly the same on a CVH car ( Non Morgan)
I converted to manual choke and it never happened again

Yup, definitely check out the auto-choke. I converted mine to a manual choke like stevemag.

I'm seem to recall from the dark days of owning a Mk3 Escort that it was quite common for people to convert to a manual choke from the auto one.

I had similar problems with a Volvo many years ago which was so bad it eventually caved in the Fuel tank.
Difficulty Removing the Filler Cap is one sign.
A small 2mm hole drilled in the filler cap solved that problem.

How old are your leads?
I had misfires on my cvh 4/4 efi
Tried everything!
Leads looked ok but replaced them with stock new ones and bingo! No misfires.
With your problem the heat build up after 18 miles could then cause issues with old leads.
New ones were not expensive so no real loss if they didn't cure the fault.
If I remember correctly they were definitely less than £30 ( if not cheaper) from eurocarparts
