I think you will find it is recording all the time on what used to be called a continuous loop system, after an accident it saves the last 20 seconds and the next 10. I have a camera that does something similar.

oh, that's easy! it's a harddrive, that continuously records. after 3h of recording, it writes over the "old" data. its called a endless loop. in case of a accident, it does not write over the old data, but stores it!!! simple :-)
by the way, most video surveillance systems are having a endless loop modus. that's because of privacy-laws. every few hours, it erases itself.

planing a m3w trip: bern, switzerland to Marmora-Vernetti, piemont-italy (http://www.ceaglio-vallemaira.it/index.php). anybody knows a good overnight stay between aosta and val d`isère? do not want to drive it in one day!

After 9 passes, "col de l'iseran" was the highest.....a stunning view!!! 2770 meter. Sorry, but can not upload a pic from my smartphone :-(

back from the piemont. 1300 km of the smallest roads i could find. 21 passes, the highest was col d'iseran 2770m, beautiful weather, excellent food!!! one broken electric cabel wich i fixed. cool trip, more to follow :-))
