The advice is not selfish, but some peoples' interpretation of it is. If you follow the highway code, you need the width of your car, the same space between you and the cyclist, and they don't have to ride in the hedge either. So if the road is narrower than that, it's perfectly reasonable for a cyclist to ride in such a way that discourages overtaking.

I'll be the first to admit, it's a lot of space to leave a cycle, and I'm happy with less, but not everyone is. Having said that, my three wheeled pedal cycles usually get left far more space as they do look a bit odd if you're not used to them.

After 5 weeks in the desert with not a female in sight, there are certain things that go beyond the pail when returning home. One of those things are space hoppers wearing lycra.

Mmmmh. Dead straight lane, with the best will in the world a cyclist and I am one also doesn't need a whole car width( regardless of Highway Code) of space allowed for a slow and reasonable overtake. I have to admit there are some appalling drivers out there but my guess is quite a few of them are also appalling cyclists. Mountain bikers on the road are the worst offenders to be sure. Most seem to be 30 something posh blokes.
Interestingly the same type who get into motorbikes at a rather late age.
Anyone been held up by one of these late( not born again) bikers slavishly obeying the speed limit. I've had to burn off quite a few of late!!!

So you're slagging other road users off for obeying the law, but you obviously think it doesn't apply to you?

It is obviously the same with bike Vs Car the world over, I personally think that the roads should be closed to the lot of them, in fact I think that unles you drive a Morgan you should not be allowed anywhere near a road.
Actually unless you drive a Morgan 4/4 you should not even be considered for a licence.

I also think the roads should also have razor wire fences down the sides to keep children and animals away.

I would refine the users a little more to Blue 4/4, 4 seaters, but I want someone to drive their car alongside mine to have someone to talk to sometimes

When I'm out on the pushbike, I ride a decent distance out from the kerb. There is absolutely no reason why cars should not slow down when encountering slower moving traffic.

Most people pass too close, and so I can move into the space I have given myself, ensuring my safety. If you ride a pushbike in the gutter stuff just comes past anyway, usually without slowing down, leaving nowhere to go if they miscalculate.

I find it usually also helps if one is being crowded by a car to do a 'nervous rider wobble' manoeuvre, that usually buys a bit of extra space. In town of course the situations are usually reversed, and it's cars getting in my way rather than vice versa.

I've always driven to the conditions of the road. And anyone who says they have never broken a speed limit is likely to being economical with the truth. Those same people slavishly obeying the speed limit (now 40)on what used to be our main roads also drive at exactly 40 when it's icy and foggy and I then find them sitting up my backside.
Generally it's bad driving that kills people. The speed cameras in Berkshire and Oxon are mainly placed to raise money not save lives. I slow down for horses and dog walkers, most of the above half asleep law abiding citizens don't even notice them.
The death rates on our roads are at the lowest rates ever but our obsession with the avoidance of any form of risk is crippling this country IMHO

It's one thing taking risks that might affect you.....it's another if it affects other people.

Last year we followed a cyclist on a lane near to Broadway. He was in the centre, but it was too narrow to pass anyway, and he had headphones, so was totally oblivious to our being there. So we had to stare at his arse for about three miles before we came to a junction. At least he was knocking on at about 20mph, and I've followed slower old blokes in dull cars far more often.

Where the footbridge from Sheffield station rises to join the tram stop, a footpath/cycle path passes immediately across the double door access. From the path it's totally blind - you can't see who might step out in front of you. Despite this, cyclists cross this access at unabated speed and there have been some narrow escapes. It's only a matter of time before somebody gets badly hurt.
