Mine work... But only as an inclinometer. I have twin LPG tanks mounted longitudinally in the back of my V8 Landie. If the gauge shows full I know I am going uphill, if on empty then I am either about to run out, or I am going downhill. Trickiest on motorways where the gradients are hard to discern so one doesn't know whether to trust the gauge.

I would like to remind all my British friends here that you moved to the metric system and that includes stop talking of Miles and Gallons. Please can you also have a word to your administrators and swap all your old fashioned street signals with the new modern ones with kilometers and liters?

Actually we buy all or fuel in litres....but we still insist in measurung consumption in miles per gallon, not miles per litre...

It's even sillier here. Canada's been metric for years, distances are posted in km, speed limits (and speedometers in cars) all in km/h, fuel is sold in litres.

In reality, though, distances are spoken of in hours, rather than any measure of distance. Government fuel consumption figures are always posted in litres/100km, but very few people "get" the reciprocal relationship to old fashioned fuel economy. So everyone still talks in mpg, with half using US figures (and therefore US customary gallons) and half using Imperial gallons. "I can get to Montreal on three-quarters of a tank" has a more immediate relevance than "I get seventeen hectares per thousand hectolitres" or whatever the Feds tell us we should be saying.

I think I get a bit more than 30mpg (Imp) or 25mpg (US) or around 9.5l/100km. But the fuel gauge doesn't help at all: I have one of those that is off the scale beyond "F" for some time, then makes a break for the "E" with alarming rapidity. I use the trip meter to remind me to fill up after 220 miles or so, which is probably quite conservative.

Rotate the gauge 90° clockwise and the fuel should last longer

Just to be confusing the smaller lengths are measured in millimetres not centimetres as in Europe.
