As a supplementary topic to Hugos question, I thought it would be interesting for us to speculate on the modifications and upgrades required to make a truly fast 5 speed Three Wheeler.

Obviously Mark Reeves has given this a lot of thought, with bigger engine [up to 2.2litres] smaller front wheels [18"], sticky rubber all round, and lowered suspension, probably with trick dampers.

I also suspect his car has been on a diet, additionally, maybe the gearbox ratios could be changed to bring them much closer, especially 1st - 2nd and 2nd - 3rd gears using a longer 1st gear. The brake pedal hardened up and some better pads installed, and of course, there is untold engine tuning capability.

What else can we suggest to make the 5 Speeder go up hills better?

Agree about the Gear ratios - stock car is fine for roads but not for tight tracks!

The stock Mazda transmission was designed for an engine with a much greater range in RPM's. I believe the redline was at 7,000rpm which makes for a >5,000 rpm range figuring idle at 1,000rpm and usefulness starting at 2,000rpm. The S&S idles at 1,000rpm becomes almost useful at 2,000rpm but the real torque as well as smoothness starts at 3,000rpm and tops out at 5,000rpm! That makes for a >2,000rpm sweep which is not a sweep. It's too short.

I'd like to have an 8-speed to help fill in those holes then you'd have useful power all the way up the speedometer!

What's your mileage? Who cares. Is it practical? See #1. What happens when it rains? You get wet.

At some point I would like to explore fitting a Mazda 6 speed box in place of the 5 speed.
Also for track days fitting a smaller rear sprocket. The 2 / 3 speeder chaps fit smaller sprockets for acceleration.

Other way round surely? Bigger rear sprocket will give lower speed for same revs but better acceleration.

You lower the gearing by fitting a smaller final drive sprocket on the crossshaft (two speeder) or to the wormwheel output (three speeder) and a bigger one at the wheel end.

Quite common for two and three speeder owners to adjust the final drive ratio to suit a given venue, but as the engine in most racing classes gives more power than standard, ratios tend to start from a higher point. One two speed racer I remember being sold had a 70mph first gear (standard is about 45).
