All,
New to the group here so apologies if the questions are simple. The fan on my'97 +8 comes on at about 80C and pretty much stays on from there. The indicated temp may go up to 90C but that's about it. It is warm here (30-33C) so I would expect the fan to come on in traffic but surprised it's coming on at 80C and staying on even after a reasonable drive. The check the actual water temp at the top of the radiator - matches the gauge reading. Appreciate an education on whether this is normal. Thx.

Sounds like it is coming on too early to me. I would expect a gauge reading of around 95 - 100 (might be a little high) before the fan cuts in.

My 3.9l '96 Plus 8 reads 95-100 under normal circumstances, can go as high as 110 if stuck in traffic on a long run.
Never been sure that the indicated temperature is accurate but I do check to make sure it doesn't go above what's "normal" (for my car).

Those are the readings I get on my 1999 +8, granted she has a new ally rad.

The later +8s did have a tendency to run hot and the fan seems to come on for long periods of time especially on the 4.6L. It maybe the sensor is too sensitive and cutting in early or perhaps there is a restriction in the water circulation. Radiators can become blocked if the incorrect ratio of anti freeze/inhibitor has not be maintained. I would be inclined to flush out the cooling system and add new inhibitor to see if that makes a difference.

+1 and while it's empty of coolant fit a new otter switch, the temp sensor switch in the radiator, they are only about £20. On my 96 Plus 8 it was at the bottom corner of radiator, they are held in place by a metal clip and push into a rubber seal, you need to replace the seal at the same time. That should sort it out, the otter switches can be temperamental. cheers

Gents. Can I take this one stage further. Seem to be different otter switches.... Mine is inserted into an alloy connector in the pipework exiting the radiator - just screwed in. Any idea what I should be ordering? Thanks again. Kevin

Hi, they made have changed from fitting it to the bottom left hand corner as you look at the radiator from the engine side to what you have. Your best bet maybe to call the parts department at the factory or good old Melvyn Rutter is most likely to know and can probably get one off to you quickly. cheers
