Gambalunga
Absolutely agree with you. The Throttle Bodies are great fun - but the reality is that you have to really drive up at the top end of the tach to get the benefit.
I personally particularly enjoy swapping the cogs and revving the engine= Throttle Bodies.
Throttle Bodies don't really equate to torque - as Gamalunga says displacement and turbo/ super chargers are more relevant if that is your " thing" A sports air filter by its self does make more induction noise and the car will have maybe 1-bhp more, the real gain is the filter is for life and a one off purchase. The cheap route to get some power at about £500.00 The standard air box with a K&N filter to a cold air induction 56mm die to a 76mm reducer. Add a none restrictive silencer side exit, and the scores on the doors went up to 102 lbf/ft133BHP. My Stock Sport dyno readings before the change of 98 lbf/ft and BHP @114. With a manifold fitted there will be more to have and a larger die cold air induction pipe but not much the next step in none throttle body power will be a Re-Map to the stock ECU. Throttle bodies once the Dyno work has been set for the engine can be tuned by changing the length of the intake trumpets to gain more torque but this is at the cost of BHP. In truth I love my Sigma engine the revs the light weight giving a good power to weight ratio for the Sport coupled with Fuel economy. If you have disposable cash then the ultimate is Throttle bodies and a Cam a bit of headwork and some con rods pistons and hay presto 200bhp engine... which on the 4/4Sport with narrow tyres she would be an absolute ASBO to Maybe just a super charger will work!!!

I designed our Williams induction kit using a very good ITG. With that, our sports exhaust full system and our remap, we are now at 126bhp on a customers road car. We also designed and developed with Omex & Jenvey the sigma throttle body kit, which we use on our Sigma race car.

And I know how well that goes, in the right hands, even with my excess weight in the left hand seat!!

According to the engineers at Omex a "sports" air filter by itself will make absolutely no difference. It will probably give you more induction noise that will make you think you are getting better performance. Getting cold air, instead of hot under-bonnet air, intake will make a slight difference. Note that the current Plus 4 GDI has a cold air intake the leads over the radiator.
If you want a real boost you need throttle bodies. It depends very much on your driving style. You may even loose a little torque at low revs but it will make a big difference if you are prepared to keep the revs up.
In the end, as the yanks say, you can't beat cubes: in other words a bigger engine. A saying not entirely true and particularly in these days of turbo charged engines, but it still has some validity. Yes , agreed on this comment ! Plus you also need a suspension set up that will cope with the power and an LSD at the back axle and then when you've got all those you may well want ABS to stop ( that is after the bigger brakes ) and traction control !!! They don't do the last two on a Mog ? I am looking at all this and want the power and the rest and must balance all this out to realise the shortcomings of too much power !!

Ah, was thinking of the bit at the end - "which we use on our Sigma race car!" First put brain in gear... madmax - S1 Aero 8 might be more fitting???
