Hi Donald.
As Roger-Cheshire says, I've had my Sigma remapped by a well known Gloucestershire dealer (ask Chunky).
I find that the engine revs more freely in 2nd and 4th and in 5th there is no real need to change down on a hill. Fuel economy is still around 45 mpg (I don't tend to push it too much - just the occasional blast round some favourite corners) and keep to an indicated 77 mph (70 on SatNav) on the motorways.
I'd certainly do it again if asked whether I wanted the remap done.

Thanks for the reply Cain. I have the mazda gearbox so I'll have to check the gbox ratios........it's a question for me as 3000 in 5th is only 70mph.....also the car oulls happily from 1500 revs so I'm wondering if the mazda box mated with the standard axle does the same as the changed axle on an older sigma.......mind you, the dealer, when we were out for a test drive, said he was thinking maybe the factory had applied a slight remap as the newer 44s seemed so lively.......?
Nick Here are the ratios for the Ford box 1st Gear : 3.61 2nd Gear : 2.08 3rd Gear : 1.36 4th Gear : 1 5th Gear : 0.76 I don't know the Mazda ratios but it would be good to know. It may be worth checking your speedo on the measured mile or even GPS to check it's accuracy. Cain

But it's not cheap, I think I ended up paying Billy Bellinger way over GBP1000 to rebuild my rear axle. Mind you, he did a splendid job.
I paid just over £1,000 for my 4.1:1 conversion through Mike Duncan about 3 years ago. I'm intrigued with your 1.8.....not the standard Ford engine by the sound of it!

No, it's the Opel/Vauxhall Ecotec conversion as done by Kevin Vernon a few years ago, I think he did about 5 of them. The basic engine is the stock 1.8 VVT engine that was fitted in Astras and Zafiras from about 2005, it gives about 140bhp in standard form. The ECU is from MBE Systems of Cirencester, who did the ECUs for TVR, and the mapping was done by John Ravenscroft (the 'J' from AJP). Kevin's original car was dynoed at 175bhp I believe, when I put mine on a dyno we couldn't stop it skipping off the rollers and it recorded 165bhp. In my little 830kg 4/4 that's plenty, though  The engine mounts to a Ford Type 9 gearbox with a modified bellhousing, and there's the Quaife ATB Diff in a 4.1:1 rear axle. The rest of the car has uprated 4-pot brakes from Peter Mulberry, one of Peter's alloy radiators, Suplex front suspension, 4-leaf rear springs with Panhard rod, anti-tramp bars, and AVO dampers. It goes very nicely and with 165 section Vredestein Sprint Classics it's very well behaved, very easy to catch if it does step out. So, mine is doing 55mph at 3000 revs in 4th. I didn't spec the axle so maybe they are just fitting the 4:1 now?
