Sorry everyone I know that I am going to get slated for this but having problems with the old eyes in the open top at the moment and refuse to give up on my Morgan . Is there anyone out there that can fit air conditioning to a 4/4 Morgan year 2000 ? Thanks ( slightly embarrassed )

I have air con fitted to my Roadster and to be quite honest its a complete waste of money. Basically, all it is, is a cooling matrix in the air intake box under the bonnet. All the engine hot air gets sucked in as well and therefore the cool air comes through as luke warm.

My car had this fitted at the factory, believe me it's a waste of time it's not the same as in a tin top. I believe it's due to the narrow frontal area not enabling them to fit a large enough condenser.

I purchased a 2013 Roadster demonstrator with 200 miles on the clock. The Factory fitted AC was a bonus since my wife was sold on the colour, not the spec. Anyway, initially I would have agreed with NeilM, on paper it's expensive and not effective. However, sometime later, I discover that there is a rotating dial inside the engine compartment which sets AC calibration. Turn it and the AC comes alive. I use it all the time when the hoods up, as it pumps out some chilled air. Ok, so the vents are still pointing at my trousers, but with a Morgan you have to live with the odd compromise.

If it is the 4/4 with the 1800 engine the same as my friend's '99 4/4 the air intake is much better isolated from the engine hot air as it has 2 separate intakes under the louvres.

On latter models the trick is to add foam or neoprene in such a way as to stop hot air from the engine bay entering the air intake.

We use our aircon often, obviously it is not terribly effective with the hood down but when the sun gets really too hot we put the hood up and the aircon on.

Borghi has fitted air conditioning to cars that did not have it so it is possible.

Whilst Caroline was driving the Plus 8 I was playing with the Aircon and heating.

The Plus 8 has a much more sophisticated heater box with both heat control and fan speed adjusted electrically. This means that both are fully adjustable across the range.

The radio has been pulled forward from the heater box: this has two big advantages. Firstly you can see the radio, secondly there are additional outlets, I think the box has three or 4 across the front of the heater box in addition to two on each side.

As a heater it is very powerful and the fan is almost silent.
The aircon is very effective at chilling your feet: with the hood up I suspect it would be good at keeping the cabin cool.
BUT it isn't as needed as one would be on the Roadster as the cockpit seems much better insulated from engine heat.

What worries me is that MMC are quite close to having a proper air blend heater/aircon = climate control as found in modern cars! On the +8 there is room, it would require re-locating the wiper motor and a couple of other small items and of course a new heater box unit...

Is there any specialist eyewear that might help?
