Earlier 4/4 were also slightly narrower across the body of the cockpit by I think c 5 inches. Wow! That would have been cosy! You'd have to choose your passenger carefully with that!

Yes, more or less. The actual body is the same width on all trads built today. The width of the mudguards is narrower because it is fitted with narrower wheels and tyres (like the 4/4). This makes the overall width of the car narrower. But not as narrow as earlier 4/4...

Closer to 2" I think Roger, that was the approximate interior difference between my '76 4/4 and '97 +4. I understand 4 seaters may have had a little more interior width, particularly at the dashboard end...

Normaly it is the same interior just the narrow body
With narrow tyres
Without bumpers

So to clarify
The really early ones were really narrow except 4 seaters which were a bit less narrower than the really narrow ones and later ones were a bit wider but still called 'narrow' and then came along the Plus 4's which were wider than the later narrow ones but you can order the Plus 4 with a body which is narrow but not as narrow as the early really narrow ones.
Better not mention the widths of Roadsters, the one Plus 8 4 seater and Plus 8's !

What is the difference in tyre sizes between 4/4 and +4 to justify the terms narrow and wide bodies?

4/4 = 165x80x15 plus4 = 205x60/15 or 205x55x16 or 195x60x15. The 4/4Anniversary and the narrow bodied plus4 185x70x15
