I've started a new Topic here with regard to the quest for an absorption type silencer design for our beloved tricycles, so as to make this easier to find later on. As we have discussed at some length in the past, I think it's pretty clear that a better flowing exhaust is what the engine in our cars need, as evidenced by the glowing headers and inherent pinking (det) in the engine at higher revs on a large throttle. Whilst some are affected more than others, the fundamental cause remains the same. Quite simply the gases can't get out fast enough. The OEM pipes are very well styled in my view and whilse we all probably have a friendly local exhaust fabricator who may be able to help design and fit a more efficient pipe, getting this sorted means offering a donor car, much discussion and then there's the to-and-fro getting the design fettled and working correctly. But we know the effort would undoubtedly be worthwhile, as evidenced by the odd brave soul running on true open pipes and feeling the additional power produced. There was a thread about this a while back where open piped cars were showing much more power on the dyno (in France I recall), so I am sure a decent pipe - properly designed - could produce good power, improved torque and be little or no more noisy that the stock systems. We've heard rumours of course that the factory may be releasing a Stage-1 kit at some point, but we've no idea when this may be or how much it will cost. All we know is that it would be a very good idea! Anyway, the point of this ramble is that I have been speaking with a firm for a few months whom have been working on just such a design. The organisation is looking to market bespoke components for the M3W under the guise of "Garage56" and from my sneak preview of some of the kit over recent weeks, it looks very good stuff indeed. The guys behind Garage56 come from the very professional and specialist world of top-end motorsport, so know what they're doing and have the pedigree to make work properly. I'm not connected in any way shape or form, but I am very enthused by what I've seen so far and make no secret of my desire to have my car 'optimised' in terms of engine setup. Personally I'm not after a big 2.3l big-bore engine or such expense, I just want to make my engine work as it was designed. Garage56 are just about to launch their wares and first off the design process will be what I would call a Stage-1 kit, which will include new silencer pipes and an airfilter kit. Here's a couple of pictures of the pipes fitted to a car and I love the fact that they look pretty much stock (they will be available with black heat shields too I am told), but as they're an absorption silencer design, they flow much much better than stock. I've not heard them yet, but they say that they are little different in noise to the stock items, but just work properly instead. Whilst I don't know the full details, it sounds as though these make a really good increase in power and torque throughout the range, remove the high rev detonation and still work within the Closed-Loop parameters in terms of fuel and timing trims within the ECU to allow the car to adjust for the new setup, ie: it's still safe for the engine. To say I'm excited at the prospect is an understatement! There's a new website where folk can sign up to be kept informed as to progress and I've put my name down on there already. I really hope this works out for them as I like the sound of their thinking and admire their decision to specialise in the 3-Wheeler in the marketplace. Clean work & it looks good but its too big compared to the factory,makes the wheels look tiny. The factory pipes look better proportion on the m3w.

Looks Ok, but I think the black heat shields would make them look slightly smaller.
Also for the few of us who already have straight through pipes and a decent air filter an ECU with a proper performance map would be the way to go.
I like you do not want to go the big bore route but just want the 20 odd horse power back that was robbed between pre production development and what we ended up with.
I will keep a keen eye on their developments though. Cheaper luggage rack anyone!

Interesting , I look forward to hearing further details. As Q8 says they do look a bit large , but if they do the job it won't really matter .
I wonder what's happening with the MMC kit ?

Thanks for the heads up, I already subscribed, with a footnote about the challenges demanded by the M3W Brooklands exhausts.
Of course I suppose they won't work on these, and I'm not willing to replace the fish tails with straight pipes, but who knows, maybe one day in the future they decide to study the issue and create properly working and un-crakable Brooklands exhausts too ...

I've subscribed. I too think there will be a lot of M3W owners willing to upgrade to a better breathing system to get the power up to where it perhaps should have been all along but don't necessarily want to go the whole hog of getting a big bore kit with cams and heads. Pipes, some inlet mods to suit and an unlocked ECU with a decent map could be something of a sweet spot. I'll be surprised if there is much of a gain with just the pipes and allowing the stock ECU to adapt to them...then again I do like surprises!

very interesting. will be curious to see more details. i agree with Q8 and HJP that they look quite large but i think the combination of black heat shields and time to get used to the look might solve the issue.

I don't disagree about a freer breathing exhaust and some extra kick in the butt hp, but the glowing header pipes and the detonation or pinging, is most likely caused by meeting emissions and how lean the ECM is set up to meet these standards.
If you run freer breathing exhaust it will cause an even worse lean condition. The same for a freer breathing air cleaner. Lets look at it this way, you exhaust more air and draw in more air but you program in no more fuel. It has to go leaner and that's just compounding your issues.
That doesn't mean you won't see improvements, you will, but there's a possibility because the motor will be running even hotter that the motor could be damaged without re-mapping the ECM for a richer running injection system.
Sorry I'm going to reference Harleys again, but a Stage I setup for a Harley usually includes exhaust, air cleaner and a tuner for the ECM. Stage II would be cams, compression or head work. Stage III would be all of the above with larger stroke and bore etc.
But the new Harleys run soooooo hot that they had issues with the exhaust valve guide on the rear cylinder on touring bike coming loose because of aluminum head expansion and guide going loose. Their fix was to put a snap ring on the guide to keep if from falling into the exhaust port causing the valve to stay open.
I'm sure that someone has been able to re-map the S&S controller and that should be the first modification. I would guess the guy from the factory running his M3W has done some major tweaks to his ECM to allow it such performance with all of his modifications etc.
Again, this is only my opinion and living through it with new Harleys, it makes a BIG difference in the motor temp and the detonation is gone as well.
I do like what Garage56 has done and it will be a nice addition as a Stage I upgrade, but don't forget the ECM and getting it to run richer.
