So how do I determine if asymmetric tires are ok?

Personally I'd not be put off by them. I use ZV5s on my Roadster and have no problems with tracking. Perhaps more extreme tread patterns cause problems?

I think Jays may well be right, if they are fitted as standard on cars from MMC then that suggests that there is not a problem, although as he says some patterns are quite extreme and may not be that suitable. The Vredestein sportrac tyres have been mentioned on here a few times as being very good in all conditions and are quite reasonably priced. I need a new set this spring and would probably go for those.

MMC may put them on cars now but aren't the front end suspensions different now?

We don't have Vredestein in the states. Never heard if them

I agree with Jays, they were on Aldermog for the 18 months I had the car and never any issues. On the front they don't seem to wear at all!

Tarka has ZZ3 Tyres from Avon, they look less asymmetric but are clearly marked "inside and outside" and are also directional.

ZZ3

The Aero Plus 8 also has narrower front tyres, 225 section compared with 255 at the back, exactly the same as on the Merc and BMW.

My Yokohamas are asymmetric, they show " outside" for the fitter to get them on correctly
No issues at all with tracking, only on certain roads with clear "ruts" in the surface that I feel in the tin top as well, bad road surface.

Winter tyres are great , in the winter, but will wear very fast in higher temperatures, and you are going to need a complete set of wheels as wheel as the rubber, which is quite an investment.

Tests have shown that winter tyres used above about 8ºC have a longer braking distance than summer tyres. I don't know what the story is with all season tyres.

Here many have two sets of wheels for their every day cars but others, such as ourselves, just have the tyres changed for the season. In our area it is obligatory to carry chains in the car or have snow rated tyres fitted during the winter season, even if it is not actually snowing.

The set of tyres not in use is stored in the garage.

Actually we do have Vredesteins. I have them on my Triumph TR4A.
I believe Coker Tire in Chattanooga stocks them (I have no affiliation with Coker)
I have Kumho's on my 1993 +8

Damper blades replaced by a race but really that's all.
