I wonder how you could resist driving it for 4 months unless you were ill or away on a long work or holidy trip.

The 3W is at a second home. And I missed it.

The problem seems to have healed itself. I took a rag to the air cleaner, wiped up the spill below the carb, and drove the hell out of it all week without any incident. still have a wee bit of oil coming out of the oil tank cap even though I put a new rubber gasket (cone shaped with hole in middle). Need to solve that problem. From now on I will have someone start it monthly believing that will prevent sumping again in the future.
If anyone believes I should have drained all the oil or done something else, by all means say so. Thanks in advance.

I have had this oil back from the breather into the air filter twice in 3000 miles. Just cleaned the air filter up and re-oiled. Morgan say check for overfilling, engine hot. Mine has always been OK regards level so not that!

Also on this V Twin forum is advice on start up to leave the engine idle for two minutes to allow any oil in sump to be pumped back into tank - no blipping. Otherwise oil in sump will be turned into foam and pushed up through breather over engine.

Next time I change my oil will be interesting to see how much oil comes out of the sump when the engine has stood?

Another fault listed on this forum is the umbrella valves situated in the rocker box, which in short stop air getting into crankcase through push rod tubes causing the oil to foam, more oil is forced up the push rod tube than can drain back into sump through smaller holes. Oil is then blown through breather system into air cleaner.

After a 4 month rest, with battery tender on, I just had over half cup of oil gurgle up out of the breather vent in the edge of the carb on my 2013 M3W when I went to start it. Yes, I blipped the throttle a bit trying to start it....

Drained the oil & refilled it. Chainged the oil filter & spark plugs and even drained the oil from the small drain bolt at the very bottom of the engine dry sump area).

Then I also changed the cam belt and installed the new style vented cam cover.

Started up right away with no oil leaks!
