Driving back from Bicester this afternoon and following a couple of Morgan's I appreciated how dim the standard rear lights are. I know the subject has been discussed before but can anyone let me know the actual LED bulbs that fit the rear lights and whether they cause any problems at MOT time, or any other time?

See www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk LED tail light are strictly unlawful unless CE marked (not usually the case). However an MOT tester does not dismantle components so provided they are of the correct colour and brightness they will pass the MOT. My LED stop/tail lights are bright and a good colour - I am awaiting my first MOT with them but can see no earthly reason why they should not pass. I have also got LED indicator lights but this is a little more complicated as you may need to fit a special relay or fit ballast resistors depending on your car's wiring. PM me if you want more details. There has been a lot of chat on the blog about this.

Do read this as I think it correctly sums up the legalities FHBVC newsletter In the real world, I have presented a car with LEDs for a MOT, but on mine, they are legal, yours isn't. But, the MOT tester does not take things to bits, so if he's not told - he won't know! As a result, the sensible advice is fit ones you think are ok, to one side and compare with the other after dark. Don't just look directly behind, but also look at an angle. It is debatable whether LED brake lights are ever legal since some sources say the bulb wattage is specified and obviously, LEDs consume way less power. (But I have a defence as the car is pre 34...).

I have LEDs fitted on the wing lights, front and rear sidelights and brake lights. The centre high level light is also LED. The car passed the MOT in November with no comments.
