I don't know much about it as I have a 'man' who does such things for me, but I know he uses a water softener gadget, and blow dries the cars. ACF50 is used as well. His ethos is to build up a layer of protection making cleaning much easier.

Please consider with polishing you have a massive surface reduction and this will result in much higher oil temperature.

Liquid glass is the only stuff that realy protect for longer time.

Oh don't rub it in(bad pun) I bought my old girl second hand and it had the whole bright pack fitted. I too prefer the black engine. My alloy is now quite dull and ilbs buggered if I'm going to polish it. Look quite old school now. Well alright just old.
Blacks the way to go really.
This winter is taking a toll on the old girl.

Maybe someone has a photo from his engine when the alloy was dull and then cleaned and new polished.

New member here from Gloucestershire posting a reply for first time.
I am hoping to order a new M3W soon. Bright pack or not is a huge and expensive decision to make. I am watching this post closely.
Some close up photos of early bright and black engines would be helpful to compare how they wear.
How is the black finish achieved and has anyone had any issues keeping it looking good?

4500 miles 1 & 1/2 winters, black is the way to go.

I keep it clean with plain water with a little car shampoo and ACF50 over everything.

Polished or Black engine is down to your own preference, I like the polished look and get some satisfaction from keeping it looking good, not difficult if you keep on top of it. The Black is the more practical if you intend to use your car all year round I think, although even that will require some cleaning and corrosion protection. It will be interesting to see how the Black engines stand up to corrosion in the longer term, if it gets under the finish it will be difficult to make it look original factory finish again. Take a look at some less well loved Harleys, they don't stand up well to salty roads, I expect the S&S will fair no better. They all require "cosmetic maintenance" to some degree to keep presentable and you cannot hide the engine out of sight!

Agree with Planenut...its down to personal preference but I do like the Black look engine.

I kept mine looking good x washing with Muck off ...then a light brush/rinse... then a coat of Muck off bike spray when dry...this is a v light coat of oil based preserver...its really great stuff...keeps the engine and all surrounding metal work/rubber etc looking like new:))

ACF50 is good in wi ter ...but its a much heavier coating and being such attracts soiling ...BUT a v good product which I use now on my 4/4 :))
