Hi everyone, the master brake cylinder has gone and I need a replacement. It's off a 1978 4/4, I think it's Girling, but have not had chance to look at it yet.Any information would be greatly appreciated.I know it's not the duo.

Kindest regards in anticipation.Max

If my memory serves me correct the rear cylinders where off an Austin Cambridge and so was the master cylinder . Try Mike Duncan at Heart of England and if I am correct I have some phone numbers I can pass on .

Hi,
Gomog has a nice chapter about that see here:
Gomog
I would recommend a tandem cylinder, I once had a complete failure on a single master cylinder, not funny at all...

Regards

Remember trying to find one for my dad, from memory Westfield sports cars still fit the same cyclinder to their new cars.. Thinking its £120 from Westfield and £250+ from Morgan...

Google it for parts number etc..

Just a suggestion..have you considered having it sleeved with stainless steel or brass? I have had motorcycle and automotive master and wheel brake cylinders done with excellent results,(no problems ensuing). Rebuild the innards with standard-bore size overhaul kits.

Is it definitely the bore that's gone? The seal kits are readily available.

Hi tmg, yes it is the bore that has gone. From what I understand the dual system was fitted to Morgans from '66 through '78, unfortunately for me it seems that at some time in the past it was modified.

There are a couple of firms that will bore out the cylinder and insert a new stainless steel bore. I'm unaware of anyone who has used this service but it sounds to me to be a very viable option if the mastercylinder bore is beyond redemption and new ones unavailable.

Also the stainless will go some way to counteracting the hygroscopic nature of brake fluid.

Adverts can be found in classic car mags and weeklies.
