The long bonnet hinge is made of carbon steel and does rust. Mine produced a few flakes of rust at 3 years old, so I gave it a liberal spray of ACF50 and it has never shown any sign of corrosion, or squeaked, since. And Vaseline on the tapes.

Jays, you say to oil the hinge with light oil. Do you have to take off the bonnet to do this.
Oiling the beading I presume is the pvc beading.
Also when rotating the tyres where does the spare fit in? It seems the rear tyres wear out the fastest.

Thanks for asking this JMc, I can't see any obvious way of oiling the hinge!

You will have to come shopping with me . Spent y/day a/noon trying every plumbers in Sunderland and still could not get all the stuff. Went into screw/fix and 3 young woman on me like a dog on a bone . Can we help you , what do you want . I said thats great service for a dating agency but only ended up with a roll of plumbers tape one girl had to walk away laughing . innocent . swmbo Works for Boots informs me that near the condoms are sex aids for men and people our age get uncomfortable asking for a tub of vaseline should have told her its to stop the leather squeaking I would just to see her face.

I used Three in One. In the end I ran it down both sides of the chrome strip with the bonnets closed, relying on the creep properties of the oil. Then opened up the bonnets and worked them up and down a few times. As mentioned, ACF50 would be even better.
The beading is the PVC ones. Oil top and under it...sparingly.
I never bothered rotating spare but probably will on the current car as it is the oldest and should be used.

When replacing tyres I usually put the spare on opposite a new one and the best of the rest goes as a spare. I don't include the spare when rotating to equalise wear.

Vaseline on bonnet tapes.
ACF50 on hinge and wing piping.
Just put 3 new tyres on so used the spare as number 4 to get use before it gets old. Put a good tyred wheel back as a spare(3mm).
Toying with idea of putting some form of rubber instead of bonnet tape. Looking through suppliers to see what's available.

If you adopt bonnet corners they will collect grit and abrade the paint. It's better to use double sided tape to fix a neoprene pad on the inside only.
As an obsessive, I prefer an unused spare wheel and tyre. That's just how it is.
You could replace the bonnet tape with high density neoprene, but the tape is traditional and does the job well if kept lubricated.

I have removed the bonnet corners as I noticed some rubbing witness marks. They were leather and getting hard due to water soaking.
The true tape does a decent job but is quite firm, but regular Vaseline coating makes it slick. What I watch for are the securing tacks moving proud of it. I have punched some down below surface level to prevent bonnet contact. Tape on the bonnet inside does help.
