When we finally get our M3W it is the intention to do some overnight trips and maybe longer. The factory luggage rack looks neat but expensive. Is it a fiddle to get in the boot with one fitted? Photos of any alternatives people have had fitted would be interesting to see.

Have to remove to get into the boot ... if properly fitted, no problem removing/attaching. The others I've seen bolt to the boot lid would prefer not to drill through that bit.

Hi The Seeker, I am sure one needs to get to the boot quite a bit when stopping. What is required to remove it?
Is it quick and easy or a fiddle? I presume one can travel around without the rack on? What fittings remain on the vehicle if one decides to take the rack off?

You just have two small brackets on the roll hoops when the rack is off. The rack has spigots that fit into the brackets and a suction cup at the back. Quick and easy to fit and remove but the suction cup does leave a bit of a mark on the paint.
Best to have anything that you need through the day in the passenger footwell or in an easily accessible pocket in a bag on the rack.

To add to the mix, when a bag is strapped onto the rack you can't access the fuel filler! Well, you can if you strap it further rearwards but I'm not happy to have a large bulk with weight too far back.

In reality, it's not a problem because you'll only need a bag on the rack when holidaying two-up, because if you're solo you can stuff the passenger footwell and still have the seat as a sandwich rest.

When we took the three wheeler across the channel last year, my wife and I practiced the Formula One style of refuelling; we'd jump out, and perform some synchronised unclipping of the rack and lift the whole lot off to the rear. Ya gotta have fun when people stand there staring at the car with phone video's going!

The rack has an 'R' clip to hold the spigot into the head hoop - don't lose them and put them in the correct way round..

I echo the comments above and with familiarity the removal/replacement task becomes very quick in my experience. Remember not to cover the fuel filler (it's actually quite far forward, so not really a big deal to keep clear) and keep regular access stuff like wallet (!) in the front and you'll be fine. I am amazed at the versatility of the rack and we got everything except just one camping chair onto it when we travelled to Classic Le Mans last year.

If you don't want to drill the roll hoops to mount the brackets that accept the R-Clips, then there are a multitude of alloy roll-cage brackets that can be drilled to suit. Search the forum and you'll find various threads that go into this in great detail.

I lockwired the R clips to the rack to stop me losing them. Not absolutely 100% secure but haven't lost one since doing this.

I hope the mark can be wiped off with a damp cloth? Would hate to damage the paint permanently!

Correct ! No problem ! I tend to leave the luggage rack on all the time. Easier than trying to find someplace safe to store it.
