"Oh, the reason a battery sitting on concrete can go flat is down to damp, causing tracking from the terminals to the ground."

Another thank you from me too Peter - you learn something new every day. One of my jobs for the weekend is to get some wood under my several batteries now.

Better than wood is a thick sheet of expanded polystyrene foam. Or a couple of old ceiling tiles if you are, like me, old enough to remember those horrors.

Wood can be as damp as concrete, EPS sheet can't.

This I found, it is a really good explanation of how batters work and what ails them.

Batteries: A short life...!

Quite why Biggin Hill Airfield is posting on the subject I can't explain...!

That's a very full and detailed description of batteries and their charging needs.

Regarding the posting from Ray he said I was lucky to have not lost the whole car. The AA man said much the same thing. It took the AA man two minutes to identify the problem .The battery was still hot and he said there was possibly a 300 amp direct short current flow to earth.
Euro Car Parts have now refunded me the £99 pounds for selling me the wrong battery in the first place.
The "correct" Yuasa battery is now fitted on the ply and everyting is back to normal. Thanks for everyones suggestions.
