Spare wheel security has generated a bit of interest recently with DaveW’s ingenious device so thought this arrangement might be worth throwing in.

I’m using a modified spinner to secure my spare however my original motivation was not the security aspect but the aesthetics (or lack of) with the standard arrangement. The utilitarian T handle and crude unfinished aluminium disk is not the elegant solution that perhaps it could have been for such a marque (IMHO).

I found a second hand spinner in reasonable nick on ebay for a few quid without the Morgan logo (MG I think ). Ideal because the plain version suited a central tamper proof retaining screw. An eared spinner would look really nice for those that have them. The other items if interested can also be found on ebay with a bit of ferreting around.

The central fixing uses a H80 hex security pin tamper screw. The larger H80 size tool bits (8mm A/F) are not quite as common as the smaller sizes. Hopefully not the sort of thing most opportunists carry around in their pocket!




And finally I must mention this. If anybody is contemplating drilling a spinner at home and is not aware of the potential safety issues when drilling certain grades of brass. Be sure to mod your drill bits to have a little zero rake and avoid the inevitable surprise!

The raw aluminium disk is something that I don't like either. It is even worse when you have the parcel rack sitting on top of it and leaving a mark.

HoE Morgan sell a polished stainless disk that I have and it looks very good.

I used the threaded rod from the t bar, and had it brazed into a hex nut spinner, seems to have worked quite well for a few years. It is fine by itself, or with the luggage rack.
