Screw in type calipers are a pain, usually just the rears and on cars where the handbrake mechanism is used alongside the hydraulic actuation of the same pads, its supposed to be a self adjustment of the handbrake mechanism but often gets called by other, fruitier, names ;-).

Thanks for all the advice.
Everything went well today and all is back together. No leaks, no damage and no dramas today, which was good!
I've had a quick shake down and it all works but the handbrake needs adjusting for the MOT. I need to check the NS brake isn't binding anymore but that is a 5 minute job tomorrow, then off to the MOT station. Fingers crossed.

Failed but only 'cos I hadn't adjusted the handbrake properly. Boo!
I've done this bit now, I think, so back for the retest tomorrow.

Thanks for the update Julia, your remedy now could be ours in the future.
It makes one realise, and not for the first time, how easy disc brakes are to service.
Whilst reading through the posts again, I had a thought about brake fluid too. If it hasn't been changed throughout the system in the last 2-3 years, there could be some moisture mixed in with the fluid, and this would cause the pistons to rust slightly in their bores. Even if you remedy the existing problem it is also worth changing the fluid throughout the system. It's easy enough to do, just a wee bit messy, and you shouldn't even need to bleed the brakes, per se to get air out.
If you need to know how to do it, just post up, as I don't want to be accused of teaching egg sucking. :xmaswow:

Thanks for the tip that I've only just seen! In the end I got a mobile mechanic out (that used to work at Aston Martin in Newport Pagnell, before they moved). He checked things out for me, and I had not quite seated the adjuster right. He did it, adjusted the handbrake cable again and we passed the MOT
