Having a poke around before the Pixie goes in for the MoT I noticed that inside the rear bumper around the mounting brackets what I had thought was a galvanised surface is now flaking off. So I suppose the coating was some sort of paint (maybe Hammerite?). The rear bumper is now showing quite a bit of bare metal inside and I suppose the front bumper will go the same way. As a new coating needs to be a bit flexible would it be OK just to spray inside the bumper with Dinitrol leaving the chrome on the outer surface untouched?

It depends how bothered you are on how it looks. When I had chromed bumpers. I kept the backs painted, not with Hammerite, but with etch primer and silver metallic. The best approach is to remove the bumper, and remove all the flaking and loose finish. Then etch prime and apply a top coat of your choice. If necessary you can then spray over with Dinitrol of equivalent. You might also refurbish the bumper irons at the same time and if you refit with new nuts and bolts it will transform the look.

I have done the quick and easy Dintrol on top of flaking paint route and it lasted quite well. Dave's suggestion is far better however as it will prevent/delay further deterioration of the inner paint finish.

We judge the backs of bumpers in Pride of Ownership. It's an easy place to gain or lose points. The factory finish does look a lot like thinned Hammerite, but for the sake of an afternoon's work, they can be transformed very easily.

They provide protection in car parks. Never quite understood the effect of protection from a Chrome Bumper, sure the Bumper takes the impact at low speed saving the body work, but then the Bumper is/was metal anyway and been chrome cost you a fortune to replace as it could not be filled and repainted. dented Bumpers just look awful

My old 4/4 had bumpers and the insides were painted with Hammerite hammered version when I bought her. They needed touching up so they were removed and Hammerite used.
