A folding hard top need not be much heavier than a soft top if materials were chosen carefully.
And if there was a folding hard top it does not have to be automatic.
Actually operating by hand can be quicker than electric or hydraulic.
The roof line on the sneak peaks remind me of the mx5 folding hardtop!
No doubt answers can be had in 24 hours to all the speculation. My neighbour owns the local Mazda garage ,here's the stats on your well engineered mx5 folding roof that seems to be the constant talking point on this thread for some odd reason .......the folding roof fits into the original Convertable space ,so no lost boot ,however it weighs 37 kg more than the standard convertable . Thats the same as putting an average 11year old behind the seats . This weight is said to be an industry achievement as many other folding roofs are much heavier ! Perhaps the aero needs that extra supercharged 100hp with her ever increasing waist line ........ Perhaps MMC could make one out of Balsa wood they seem to be very good with ash .......yes one more sleep Ray

Are you talking pre 2015 model? as the folding manual hardtop MX5 for 2015 is 100kg lighter than the outgoing model!

I am talking about the current model ,the 2015 model will not be available in the uk until this summer .The 100kg you are trying to explain is the TOTAL weight saving against the current outgoing model , this weight saving is mainly due to the lighter chassis and general all round shaving of grams here and there . It is most certainly not 100KG saving on the roof ?.............

If only Ray ,that silver arrow really was a masterpiece of engineering ..almost as good as an mx5 folding roof ! Direct drive supercharger not like the new aero though ?

I didn't say it was, but it could be an appreciable part of the weight saving seing that they have ditched the automation On the smart Roadster the hard top is actually lighter than the softop. All academic anyway looking at the sneak peaks it looks like a complete top.
