Absolutely, couldn't agree with you more, Peter.

I am sure Morgan will be already planning the future but my guess their progress will be constrained by the level of investment required vs that available.

For my tuppence worth, I think both Aero4s and 6s (as well as the lovely 8) make sense, particularly if they can reopen big markets such as the USA.

Have I missed a trick though - I thought ALL manufacturers were being COMPELLED by EU legislation to have an average CO2 emmissions figure of 130g/km ??

As Morgan don't have ANY cars producing this figure, I am concerned that Brussels will come a-callin' with some bad news?

Thus a lower CO2 Aero 4/6 surely will be a necessity? And, for that matter, an Ecoboost 4/4 (anyone up for a sensibly priced one of those... )

Aston brought out the Cygnet( spelling ok?)
That helps lower their CO2 profile.
Electric/ hybrids also do this and there are more coming into being now.
Eventually MMC will have to evolve in line with legislation, selling sufficient numbers of low emissions cars leading to low cost end cars with low emissions to give sales.
Leaving room for top end beasts.
Which models are the current best sellers?
Probably 4/4 or +4?
It is these that small eco friendly engines would be easier to match with by buying in ready made versions.
Big engined cars would still be feasible though but in numbers to match low emissions cars to conform with legislation.
An electric Morgan is not out of the picture...there is a yellow one already!
It all depends on how the EU decide on the scale of manufacturer and compliance too. Will smaller manufacturers have more leeway?

How much scope is there for a trad chassis to carry hybrid/ electric power units and batteries etc?

I've had my hands one diesel Ghibli for a couple of weeks - nice enough car. The engine sounds like a tractor though - regardless of what the marketing would have you believe. Wouldn't want it in a Morgan thanks.

This scenario reminds me of the original v12 xjs introduced in 1975 ,where sales were not as good as expected due to the 5.3 litre's extreme thirst and servicing complexity .By 1983 jaguar brought out the 3.6 litre version which being cheaper to purchase ,more economical to run and more service friendly ,helped the model achieve a run of 21 years .
It would seem that Bentley have now successfully done the same thing with their continental gt .... From w12 to v8 .....options !
Personally I'm a big fan of the straight six engine .....it tends to howl unlike a v8 burble .......and in keeping with the traditional British sports car.....

the ownership of large engined cars is becoming ever more costly, for example in China the tax on anything over 4.0L makes them affordable only by the ultra rich.

I love the big V8, but the hard truth is that in markets that MMC sees as important the future needs a smaller engine option: a V8 is fine, but it needs to be 3.5L, not 4.8.

I have a 1957 Fordson Major with a fire engine perkins v8 fitted .It really is a powerhouse with monsterous torque !

Now your talking ! But where do you get a 3.5 litre V8 these days. All the engines that size are 6s.

Peter I agree as much we love the V8, their day is almost done. Whilst governments try to apease greenies ,and do gooders,petrol heads will have to face up to the fact that we will be sitting behind small eco engines. Morgan have to grasp this as well,or they will fade in to history like the dinosaurs of old.
