I have found the offending wire causing the short , it was trapped in the heater box, another story! , still no power to brake light switch , the fuse that was blowing was number 1 it doesnt blow but still no brake or reversing light, are there any other fuses which could stop the feed, i have disconnected the brake switch and joined the wires to bypass the switch but still nothing ?

You need to double check the fuse - make sure you've changed number 20, and if you have a master fuse box on the bulkhead - check that also. Under dash - Fuse 1,2, and 3 are all named as "Engine" and 15A. 20 is diagonally opposite and also 15A, but bear in mind that this may not be accurate. It sounds to me as if the short and blowing fuse might not be related to the brake lights?
You may have to trace back from the switch until you locate a break in the feed.

Update... broken feed to the brake switch, where the wire had been trapped the core was showing but seemed intact, the break was slightly further up the cable, reversing and brake light fuse is No1 on my car ?!...On the road at last !!!
