Yes I thought something might have jammed inthe pulley belt too, but all appears ok.
I can rock the car back and forth and the rear wheel moves slightly as it takes up the backlash in the bevel box and drivetrain. Clutch works fine but as I let up the peddle the engine would eventually stall if I don't depress the clutch Again.
The reason I think the problem lies in the gearbox is that if I select a gear and don't push the gear lever fully home it will jump out when I rock the car back and forth. I think my next move is to take off the gearbox covering and check the gear selector mechanism as I think it might be stuck in two gears. I will keep you posted. Cheers! johnml

I'm just catching up on your postings & wondered how long it's been since you last used the car before changing your fuel sender? If it's a matter of days, it's unlikely to be jammed clutch plates etc & unless you've noticed any issues or anything unusual beforehand it's difficult to imagine something like your symptoms happening without a little movement.
If your lever jumps out of gear it points to something in the linkage not allowing positive engagement. This would also mean the car is stuck in gear if it only moves back & forth a short distance as you describe.
If the clutch is pushed fully home, the car should then be free to move further. Is this the case?
If it IS free to move, albeit with transmission 'drag' felt, then your driveline is free & you're correct to assume it's a selection problem.
I'd guess that your car has the remote linkage, too.
