Hi everyone, I am pretty new to this forum, if anyone can give me the benefit of their experience it would be most appreciated. Recently acquired a 1970 4/4 with a ford engine and Mitsuba FP3 pump. The engine suddenly cuts out, after coasting to a stop can hear the pump working and the engine starts again. Over 20 mile journey cut out 3 times. Are these pumps repairable or best to change the whole unit. If so with what make? Thanks in anticipation.

Pump could be "getting old". Do the checks above first- filter, breather, relay. Is there a filter between pump and tank? Always worth having to stop tank crud getting into the pump. If not...fit one. Cheap and easy to do. I did this on my 93 4/4 with cvh efi engine. My pump failed and was replaced by new....not repairable. Whilst doing it I drained and flushed the tank( crud came out), new main filter was fitted on engine end, in effect a system overhaul. New pump was Bosch version of the original. they are sealed units so not repairable. Yours may repairable be so check the make etc. Out of curiosity i cut open the main filter before disposal....the filter material was grey indicating it had caught stuff, reinforcing the advice to change them periodically. This stuff would have come through the pump hence a possible reason for failure.

Standard for that car is a block mounted mechanical pump. Pretty simple and no need to change it if the engine is standard.
Think the Mitsuba incorporates a filter, worth a look as a blockage there could be the problem and the pump itself is fine.

As Martyn said a block mounted mechanical pump driven off the cam was original figment. Either an AC or Fomoco. Nothing wrong with them, will keep a pair of Webers fed and around £25 new. If your Mitsuba is ticking it should be working so is probably a blocked filter or line unless it has an intermittent fault. No relay is required. New electric pumps aren't expensive. I'd suggest inline filters before the pump and before the carb and see what happens. Also check for rust in the fuel tank, blow the fuel lines through and check for crud in the carb. Keep us informed!

Re My question of Fuel Pump problems, would like to thank everyone for their comments. Have cleaned the filter on the pump and checked all the fuel lines etc. Hopefully that has cured the problem, as all seemed well on a recent journey, time will tell! A.J.
