Can anyone tell me whether the 4.8-litre engine on the Aeromax has belt-driven or chain-driven cams, please? The car is booked in next week for its 5-year major service; and if it is a [cam] belt, that would definitely need changing... BTW, the online parts book does not give me any engine info !

Just looked at a picture of the 4.6 engine on Google (BMW 4.6 V8) and it certainly looks chain driven, the ally castings at the front would all have to be striped off if it were belt. Belts tend to be behind plastic covers and chains behind or rather inside ally castings. You can't rely on that to be universally correct but it's true in 99% of the cases, best to check, any BMW dealer would tell you if their 4.6 V8 requires a belt change, to be totally sure.

Colin beat me to it. BMW went away from belts more than 20 years ago... One good thing about them...

+1. I know several cars where cam belts failed despite regular changes. Chains or gears are better & the difference in cost is small.

Though chains do, very occasionally, fail... And BMW MINI early 1.6 diesel suffered all sorts of problems with slipper tensioners... Another reason I sold mine as it was just beginning the telltale noises...

The Ferrari belt change used to be a major shock to owners.... The 4.8 is chains that should last a very long while.

Thanks guys! You've all been a great help and that [chain-driven cams] fitted to the BMW V8's is useful to know! Touch wood, my Max has been very good to me (despite a few niggles since I took delivery of it) and I really look forward to many more miles of happy ( read: wearing a big grin) motoring! Happy Easter!
