Your son in law should speak to his local police. Explain the history re getting stopped. Request they put a note linked to the ANPR data with his details and a note ,too, of the repeated stops. Also make sure he has photo ID on him. This would then probably allow on the spot clearing up rather than custody. Has he asked if the clone car is also a Merc of same colour/model etc? Provided the DVLA have correct details re him as V5 named keeper the repeated stops will be annoying to say the least. It is only likely to st when they catch the offending vehicle. Maybe he should get DVLA to issue a new reg? Worth a try if it continues. To get new plate you must go to a licensed supplier with V5 and photo ID. But the "benefits" of a false plate mean there is a black market. Also plate theft is on the up.....but mainly for common run of the mill cars to enable make/colour etc to match the cars up. One of the downsides of the increasing pressure on motorists with points/disqualification system. Desperate unscrupulous people out there cloning plates. Besides criminals trying to hide their ID.

Reading the DVLA website they are reluctant to issue new plates. He had his drivers licence on him! They police car followed him for ages ,he was going to pull over but thought he would wait for them to stop him. They were waiting for the boxing cars! The A45 has a massive black kevlar spoiler on the roof cost him 3 k not standard.
He is going to buy a private plate. Thanks for all the advice.

Or, he could solve the issue once and for all by selling the Merc (which is, after all, a gangster's car) and buying a Morgan. Simple!

It will matter not which number is allocated to the vehicle, the record will stay attached. It is the record that needs changing & that can only be done by DVLA & the police.

It's likely that more stops would occur until the offending cloned car is found. Whoever is using it is using false plates for a reason... To avoid traffic offence prosecutions.... Could be a disqualified driver....... As part of other activities....drugs,theft, etc. ANPR will note the car every time it passes a camera. In an ideal world a pattern may be found to help locate it......is it local or another area, for example. Depends on the intel surrounding the car as to effort put in. Not perfect but the real world situation unfortunately.

He has only been stopped in the Birmingham area of the M6 so must be happening around that area. Just hope he doesn't get stopped by a policeman with attitude! They are out there.

I'd go back to the seller and demand my money back, the car is not as described and is not fit for purpose.

He is on touch with the Mercedes Dealership. They say it is not their problem. The car is A1. Just the plate !

I'd go back to the seller and demand my money back, the car is not as described and is not fit for purpose. I'd suggest that would get very nasty quite quickly as a plate problem is not the sort of thing the sale of goods act covers, and there is no suggestion of any illegality on behalf of anyone involved with the real car. I could easily believe the garage didn't know of the cloning.

And the timing of the cloning is hard to establish...
