- what a coincidence; I have just finished upgrading my iMac to Yosemite after holding off for several months 'till I felt the bugs were sorted! I did my Mac book air last week with no issues however, my iMac stuck on the install bar at 50% for hours.Cue palpitations as I feared the worst. I Googled the symptoms and it seems a lot of people have randomly had the same problem. One guy suggested a fix involving 'cmd R" and switching off/on and it seems to have worked. So, two Apple machines upgraded - one easy peasy and the other a nightmare.....!!

Hi Andy, Yosemite is really a mature and troublefree system, but needs more resources. If you have just 4gb of Ram (or less), you should upgrade. Bevore installing Yosemite perfom the both harddisk checks (volume & authorisation) in the disk utiliy. Regarding the broken IOS sync: It might need a new pairing between iTunes and the IOS device via USB connector. Make sure that check checkbox for the Wlan sync is active. If it still doesnt work, it might be caused by the IOS device (fragmented memory). Usually it will work again after closing all open apps. Then shutdown the IOS device by holding the switch ON pressed until the slider pops up. Wait until its completely shut off. Then switch it on again and gibe it another try. Remark: this oddity occures once in a while especially on older devices with less Ram (I am not talking about the size of the Flash!) Best regards Kurt

Most people know where I work. So this is what I see most of with respect to Yosemite.
1. The upgrade from one Version of Mac OS to another is major, back the michine up first, often see bad installs due to bad internet and corrupted download, or because that there was an underlying hard drive issue.
2. Yosemite should run fine with 4gb ram, the main issues I see with slow running machines are due to old failing hard drives, large amounts a data on the desktop (simply this is referenced in cached memory, and is accessed all time in the background, initially is put in RAM, but when you run lots of APPs it has to move cache onto Hard Drive) if you need big folders or files on the desk top create aliases for them, finally if you have put File Vault on, unless you really need a highly secure encryption of you data switch it off.
3. If you only have 4gb of ram and open loads off apps then yes it will slow down as more ram is used up, certain apps are more memory hungry than others, you can see this using activity monitor. This is the same for Mac OS and Windows.

I run Yosemite on several computers, the oldest is a Macbook Pro of 2009. I upgraded it to 8Gb RAM and a 500 Gb SSD Drive and it works just fine. There were no issues during the update, maybe because we have a very quick and stable internet access.
When the update is announced, I usually wait for a few days until the download servers are less stressed though.
Oh yes, I run frequent automatic backups using time machine and a wireless time capsule, which also serves as my Wifi access point.

I have a Mac Mini running Yosemite, the latest update among other things introduced Photos. At the same time it eliminated iPhoto. In my opinion this is a bad thing. It introduced the ability to sync over iCloud which is of no value to me as I have nothing to sync. Photos is less usable, edit tools are not under the Edit tab they are under Image & much less useful than iPhoto. This seems to me to be largely changing things for no reason other than Apple know better than you what you need or want. Why could they not just give the opportunity to have a look at Photos then keep iPhoto if wished?

I use Photoshop Elements to do all my photo editing, so have never played with iPhoto. Seems the new Photo is more about bringing all the Apple platforms together than anything. As to the Cloud, I don't want to back up to something I neither own nor control...!!

Indeed. I detest Adobe's licensing model, and dislike the idea of using the cloud as storage.
Fortunately I have a copy of Aperture, and will continue to use it as long as it works. If/when Apple get too dictatorial, and the old apps no longer work, I shall abandon OSX and go to Linux.
