I run Yosemite on several computers, the oldest is a Macbook Pro of 2009. I upgraded it to 8Gb RAM and a 500 Gb SSD Drive and it works just fine. There were no issues during the update, maybe because we have a very quick and stable internet access.
When the update is announced, I usually wait for a few days until the download servers are less stressed though.
Oh yes, I run frequent automatic backups using time machine and a wireless time capsule, which also serves as my Wifi access point.
