I filled up my 4/4 at the pump today, drove home and parked up in my garage. A few hours later the smell of petrol was very strong in the (attached) garage and even seeping into the house. I checked for leaks and pools - none evident. Any other suggestions?

If you really topped the tank and drove a short distance home into a hot (relatively) garage it could be possible that the petrol has expanded enough to be venting the tank ...
If you release the filler carefully there will be a pressure release heard.

Is your fuel filler pipe perished and starting to crack? Just replaced mine.

I had the same problem, the dealer said there was a connector /clip at the top of the fuel filler hose which needed replacing.

I m not sure about the Zebec engined 4/4 , but does it have a carbon canister on the bulkhead?
If so it is possible that there has been an overflow of fuel into this device , and it will need to be emptied out of any liquid fuel.

How difficult is it? It looks a tricky operation and I hear the replacement part is expensive. Mine was spotted during the annual service. I didn’t replace it myself as I was recovering from a disc injury and could barely drive the car. I will happily tackle it next time but I think you need to be a bit of a contortionist to get in there. It cost me £97.

The pipe is quite expensive, £95 from memory (I bought mine from Graham at Melvyn Rutters). Fitting the new pipe is relatively easy, as long as it is a warm day; but getting the old one off was a  It age hardens. However, if the old one is cracked, you will smell petrol. Also, when you fit the new one, make sure it does not have any kinks in it, or you will get the fuel blowing back when you fill the tank.

Budster is correct, it is a fairly easy job, but can be a bit awkward. What you want is some brake grease. It won't attack the rubber and is quite useful for getting essentially rubber bits over metal, ie cooling hose fitting.
One of those things that you'll wonder how you ever managed without it!
