1989 Plus 4 - 2lt Rover - I have a gear selection problem from 1st to 2nd and 3rd to 4th. Goes in eventually but feels like clutch not fully engaging, so crunching cogs, but wonder if it is maybe the gear selector gate which could have broken/worn? Anyone any experience of this and the possible solution(s), please?

It's most likely to be the gearbox extension that houses the gearlever. It is mounted on the gearbox casing with four bolts with neoprene or similar bushes. They are known to deteriorate and allow the extension to droop or drop messing up the lever to selector alignment. In more extreme cases, the estension can foul the propshaft - you'certainly hear it.
New bushes are obtainable from Rimmer Bros. Replacement involves removal of the seats, gearbox tunnel cover trim and the cover. After removing these, access is easy and you can check the condition of the gearbox rear flexible mounting, handbrake and cable and check and grease the UJ and the sliding part of the propshaft. Probably a day's work if you're fast, two days if you're paced and want to clean up a hidden part of the car.

I had a 1993 +4 with the same problem, there is a smmall nylon bush which fits onto the end of the gear stick which is held in place with a wire clip, over time the edge of the bush gets worn and the clip comes off, did a temporary repair at Snetterton on mine with some stainless lock wire, a replacement bush was bought from Rimmers . Make sure you identify which gearbox you have as there are two differnt bushes.

+1. I have the gearbox manual if you pm me your e mail. But I had a problem with the dome that sits at the bottom of the gearlever this has a tang that engages to the extension holding the spring tight. The tang broke & it was a similar problem but with rattle from the gear lever. Try first removing the grear knob & gaiter (the leather cover of the gearbox has to be removed) to see if the tang is broken. If not then it almost certainly is the bushes. GoMog has lots on this http://www.gomog.com/allmorgan/gearindex.htm

I had same problem with the tang breaking on the dome, its a part not easily available, but MG owners group had some made for V8 MG's (same gearbox) a few years ago, alternative is get it re-welded.

Totally agree, those rubber bushes are prone and replacing them cures a myriad of selection problems. For sure the first things to try, after that bleed the clutch and suspect a weepy slave cylinder before you start stripping the gearbox. It's a very good gearbox really and 90% of the problems are the bushes. Good luck with it.

Most probably the 4 rubber bushes holding the gear stick remote. I had exactly the same symptons on my 92 plus4. I spoke to Keith at Brands Hatch Morgans and they sold me the polyeurathane replacement bushes. I would not touch tbe gearbox until this has been done. The bottom of the remote was touching the uj on the prop shaft. Noise to end all noises.

Sorted. Thankyou all for all the suggestions - it was the bushes on the remote.
