You only use a little at a time? Solvents cost, some owners don't realise when I am doing their kingpins that the cleaning tank fluid, the releasing fluid and the cutting and drilling fluid all have to be paid for, as does reamer re-sharpening etc. not to mention £1,000 worth of kit to set up in the first place. A couple of pounds a job covers the consumables but there is a cost and these fluids can save grief and damage and many times work out cheaper in the long run that damaging components getting them apart. I am always a little amused at owners who spend tens of thousands of pounds on their pride and joy and moan about a 50p clip..... I had one owner ask me if it was really needed to replace his nyloc nuts when I was doing his suspension and 'how much do they add to the bill'......I explained they were FOC and would he like me to put his car back together with old parts?

When working by myself on the +8 , I am frequently confronted by a stubborn nut , bolt , or other fitting . I know that if I try to remove it using hand tools and brute force I stand a good chance of damaging it beyond the point that I would choose to refit it.

I am always therefore happy to pay a little more to people who work on my car because they have accumulated many of the correct tools , and they have the expertise and experience to use them effectively. I accept that they are also consuming everything from solvents to odd fittings , and I think a charge for these is more than fair.

Hey guys I'm just as bad complaining about that tin of fluid but spent £20k on a garage extension and a two post lift.

Then you need a good oil drainer and if you have that you want a proper compressor and after making a mess filing up a gearbox that is hard to get to, you go and buy a proper tank and pump to fill gearboxes.

Ok, I have not bought the gearbox oil pump yet but have just returned a £40 1.5 litre Sealey gear oil syringe because it leaked like a sieve.

It appears unless it is at least over £150 most garage kit is just not up to it either quality wise or they are a bit crap to use.

Then even as an amateur you need a good stock of nuts, bolts, different size crush washers and extra pots of oil and filters as friends always turn up needing work done.

I reckon I must have £300 in consumables to allow me to do most jobs without running out of a miscellaneous consumable.

Looking at the real cost of running a proffessional workshop I find it difficult to see how many small garages can afford to run on £40 an hour.

Peter, I don’t know if your brake design is similar to my +4 but a “trick” I recently learnt. The pads are held in position by a spring clip. The pins retain the clip in position. The pins have a shoulder that impinges on the spring clips preventing the pin from being extracted from the housing. The trick is to push the spring clip down with a screwdriver while tapping the pin out. If, like me, you think the pin is corroded into the housing and give the pin a bit of welly without first pushing the spring clip down you end up bending the clip. Having learnt the “trick” the pins came out easily. The new pad kit I bought came with new pins and clips.
