Here's another in the never ending M3W battle against rattles; I have a rather annoying rattle which sounds more like chirping coming from behind the steering wheel or, behind the dash. It is more audible at lower RPMs, but maybe I just can't hear it at higher revs, not sure. Can't find anything loose underneath. Could the steering wheel be rattling on the splines? Doesn't feel loose, though. Any ideas?

I had a chirping rattle noise coming from the same area as you describe and I fixed it by wedging a piece of felt between the steel tubular frame and the metal at the bottom of the dash area. When you hear the noise, grab the dash aluminum near where the unused 12v plug hole is and pull it toward you slightly and see if it quits chirping; if so that is where the sound is coming from and felt is the answer.

At various times I have felt that this car is nothing BUT a collection of annoying rattles and chirping sounds.
When something goes quiet it has usually meant that it finally fell off or just broke...
What's your mileage? Who cares. Is it practical? See #1. What happens when it rains? You get wet.

After removing the all the baffles (total of six) I can no longer hear any squeaks or rattles. Guess that's a plus. Also on the plus side the right pipe has a lovely "twitter" on overrun, just like my DBD Goldstar, neat.

Not what I am sure you want to hear, but it may be the compensator. The squeak in mine has now become so annoying that I am going forward on the Centa upgrade. A stethoscope will help locate where it is coming from. Good Luck.

Met a guy who said he had a zerk installed in the compensator, but to do so a hole had to be cut in the bell housing to install the zerk. Anybody had this done? Do you know where the hole in the bell housing has to be drilled? The measurements? He said that anytime the compensator started to rattle he just gives it a shot of grease. Is this guy "pulling my leg"?
