I have a 2005 Cooper. No problems except (inherent with the years 02-06) power steering issue and a small oil leak. Sensible in town yet drives like a motorised roller skate when let loose. The BWW quality is also apparent. Nice car to accompany a Morgan

I had a cooper s for a while Peter.
Great fun to drive, felt very quick. Dreadful run flat tyres though.
I didn't change them as there were insurance problems if changed. The insurance company held that you never get a blowout at 80mph with them.
Mine did puncture though and cost a fortune to replace, they wouldn't repair.
Also used almost exactly twice as much petrol as it's computer was claiming.
I changed it for a convertible one after a year and that was even more fun.......

Quite right, avoid the big alloys with run flats, terrible bump steer and the wheels themselves are much heavier than standard steels as i notice when changing to and from winter tyres each year.

Nick I would agree about the run flats. I think they are appropriately named run flats as we always had tyres that were running flat! Never had a car that had so many flat tyres!

We've also got a 1.6 Cooper hatch - one of the last of the model prior to the current one. Brilliant car - solidly built and real fun to drive. Do agree a Morgan and a Mini is a good combo to have.
Interestingly, both Morgan and the Mini factory provide great factory tours.

Wife has a cooper s sidewalk soft top and loves it, stick to the road yes mpg around 30
Very much in the dog house, could be up for rehoming

Nick Ive had two. A Cooper and a Cooper S. The runflats should be avoided. Noisy, expensive and uncomfortable. If I were to buy another it would be a Cooper on standard tyres and if it is still an option, a spare tyre. Diesel seems to be frugal. No issues or breakdowns at all. Boot very small as is rear legroom. Holds value quite well too.

Gail had a 2002 cooper from new and has just changed it for a 2015 cooper. Worst feature of the early car was the rubbish seat mechanisms and the run flat tyres. The new car is a 1.5 three cylinder with turbo. Amazing car to drive with a much improved interior. Amazing mpg also.

I am currently on my third Mini, the first was a R53 Cooper S, followed by a R53 JCW currently have a R56 JCW no problems with any of them. Great fun to drive, the JCW has 210hp, good as a 2 seater otherwise luggage space is very limited.

Had three examples of the R56 generation hatch. An 'S' and then two JCWs. Fantastic cars, only moved on from serial MINI buying when the school run crap exceeded the boot and rear seat capacity.
Fuel consumption is a pleasant surprise with 40mpg+ regularly possible (kids in the car, see) even on the so-called hot versions
What would I do differently?
NEVER get the gloss black roof - bird poo corrodes it instantly.
DON'T BOTHER with the pricey satnav. Garmin do a custom behind the wheel mount
TAKE OFF the runflats. The stiff sidewalls bend rims and cause slow deflation issues
DON'T HAVE KIDS - I wish I still had my MINI
