..........how ridiculous it is that they can "restore" a car and replace every single part as long as the VIN plate is original. If they were to build the same from scratch using parts from the factory it would be a "recreation" and worth a fraction of the price. It's all down to provenance.
Exactly the same with aircraft. Find the remains of a Spitfire that has been buried in the sands of a beach near Calais since 1940 and because the engine and airframe "VIN" plates exist it can be re-built as the original.

I think this topic has been doing the rounds for many years in vintage racing circuits. Some racers have only the door handles that are original.

I watched this tonight and loved the engineering aspects of the project but the elitism I found uncomfortable and in particular Lord March chocking on "replica". He was more than happy with the Vickers Vimy replica on it's penultimate flight at Goodwood... I loved looking around it and watching it fly around in 2009. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbLdzx4A8FA

I've got a feeling that Lord March's comments were a bit led by the questioner and editing
The programme makers are always keen to get an angle with a bit of controversy and probably jump interviewed said Lord by leading questions without giving him time to properly think about the car, it's pedigree and history
He probably isn't an expert on the Jaguar Lightweight and had in the back of his mind of keeping the Goodwood Drivers Club a bit exclusive not knowing who the potential owners were and letting Jaguar get some free publicity out of it

That is very true I tend to forget that it's all about selling air time and not made for altruistic reasons. The owner of an original lightweight I thought was very honest with his comment on racing against a new one saying of course you would back off as yours is worth 5 x the cost.
At the end of the program I did think there could be an opportunity for this pool of talent to create and/or produce another racer as clearly the market is there.
I have never encountered first hand any elitism in the car world although I'm not a club man so maybe have avoided it.

A company plans to build 18 cars. Chassis numbers are allocated, and 12 are built. Some time later the remaining 6 are built, using exactly the same materials, tools, and techniques as the first 12.
Of course the first run will be worth more, as they have a longer history and provenance, but to refuse to see the new cars as 'genuine' is just plain bonkers.
I'm sure you are right, Stewart, and there was a bit of editing going on there.

Let's not underestimate the value of the baubles in the form of the watch and bag.
After the owner will never take the car out so they need to have something to be able to show off for the money !
Just look for someone desperately swinging his/her wrist around to show off their steering wheel.
Sad.
Just taken the S2 from Hampshire to Hilversum in the peeing rain. Ride em hard and put em away wet. Then polish the furry bits off at the weekend.....
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

Sad? I'm quite a fan of Bremont watches myself. The watches and presentation case are a nice touch IMHO. I suspect that anyone being able to afford these cars has no need to flash his wrist about in the hope that it may impress.
