I have sprung for the titanium 2" wrap as I gave up on any attempt to keep the pipes looking clean and un-blued. They just get too hot! So the wrap.
First go round will be from the flex coupling to the oxygen sensor then a bit of jiggling around that then all the way up to the heads. Fine.
I would like to take whatever is extra (!) and use it to go back from the flex coupling the the slip joint of the muffler, which is about 12-13". That small section is blued and it flares from the coupling to the slip joint. The muffler section's color is fine and unchanged. Only that small interval is blued. It appears to be an expansion section for the gases before they hit the baffles.
Am I on the right track? Thoughts anyone?
What's your mileage? Who cares. Is it practical? See #1. What happens when it rains? You get wet.
Michael - the 'expansion' section you mention is where the CATs live and anything you can do to increase the heat build-up in those will mean the emissions will be lower and keep the authorities even happier! I wrapped mine right back to the slip joint with the main silencer, as it made it look better in my view, as well as encourage quicker CAT warm-up too.
Ah, an excellent rationale! I shall do this thing and use that as a reason. Sadly, in this, the state of Vermont, no authorities will notice. Our 'motorcycle' inspection consists of making sure that the wheels are still attached and that the lights work! That's it!

Not 'sadly' at all - that's a cause for celebration! We need to jump through our hoops every year from 3rd birthday onwards and we continually 'gold-plate' the next bright idea from the EU to make sure cars get scrapped to force folks to buy new..... We'll be as bad as Australia before we know it!
I had my Pipes wrapped to the oxygen sensor and did some 2000miles with the bandages. In the meantime I unwrapped and now the exhaust has a perfect, uniform black coverage. Like it, will keep it that way

What kind of wrap did you use?

I used something rather cheap, found by google search. (50 meter roll for some €1/meter) It was 5 cm wide and 2mm strong but I do not remember the shop. I wrapped with overlap, so isolation was 4mm. The cheap stuff lost tension after some month and by removing it I found the blackend pipes. I am pretty sure any other proper wrap will cause the same effect.
If you are going for the black surface only, you could ask a gunsmith for the chemical for blackening gun barrels. That causes a chemical process of controlled corrosion of the very top layer of metal surface to seal it. "Brünierung" is the German word for the process.
