When I first got my Morgan a year ago I had a bit of a service and some work on the rear hub brakes done at Lifes Motors

At the same time I asked them if they could replace the heater box filters as they were pretty well disintegrated

They did all the work I wanted and I was very pleased with the service and results and have continued to use Lifes and will continue to do so but I did wonder why my cockpit heater was so poor in that it just wouldn't put any heat in the car

Thinking it might be something to do with heat transfer from the engine or the fan, I investigated further and removed the filters that were put over the boxes

All became clear - the filters were far too dense to allow proper airflow - they were a dense foam with a dual layer paper/cotton type filter, the type ive seen in bag less vacuums

Mrs S and I went out in the Mog last night and I had to turn the heater off, our legs were so warm!
Moral of the story - make sure your filters are thin, coarse open filters that allow airflow if you need some heat

I just went to a local foam supplier and selected a foam from them and they even cut it for me!

Just cleaned mine; certainly the first time in the 10 years I've owned the 4/4.
Dirty and clogged would be a good description, but it is a very open structure foam, so it appears far better now.

Following Peters post about how dirty his filter was I popped mine out yesterday, after blowing out the dead flies from the reverse side it looked fine but a few moments in warm soapy water showed how much it had trapped, the water was black in seconds......a good soak then a dry in the sun and it's back in. Looking at it closer it's very similar to the aquarium filter medium I posted about last week and a sheet of that for about £10 would provide several filters.

yes definitely the thin - 12mm aquarium type filter, coarse open cell is the best in my opinion

Not sure whether carbon impregnated makes a difference as carbon is used for cleaning water - not sure whether that makes a difference when dry, eliminating any engine smells

As my car is quite old, I was able to replace the crappy old heater box with a stainless job from Heart of England. All it has instead of a filter is just a network of holes drilled in the top to stop debris, small mammals, and such stuff getting through. Is a filter really necessary?

Its SUMMER why do you need a heater and I worked in the garden all evening me pointing the old wall with just a tee shirt on . Raided the fridge for a cold drink I was roasting.

Because we also drive in the winter? Also when I go to work at 06:30, even in summer it can be bit nippy, and a bit of warmth around the legs is very welcome.

Not a lot I can say about the bit of warmth around the legs I have the same HOE J Worrall heater box as you Ben Duncan sorted it out and fitted new home made rubber gaskets the old open top thing let leaves in he put the heater nearer the bulk head cleaned it all out . Returning from MOG 2014 I had to carry some stuff so the hood s/screens and hood went up but the heater pull stuck ( sorted ) it was like being in a furnace . twisted all the way home it being to hot . Yet with it open you never notice or feel the warmth even with a 3 zip ton cover .
