The battery in my old Tom Tom has died and the maps are getting very old and I hate paying for annual upgrades. Time for a new one I think.

Anyone invested recently - Tom Tom or Garmin? Motorbike or Car version?

Only requirements are full European Maps & Lifetime Map upgrades.

Any advice or 'don't touch this' advice welcome.

I'm no expert but went for a Garmin. We don't use it much but in Scotland it was fantastic. It never lost signal and was always spot on.

The live traffic is better on the TomTom but if you want to pre plan routes make sure you go for a version which can load an "itn" file. The Start series don't have this.

Going back about 5 years I had a nightmare time getting tech help from Navman to download the European maps - I live in Oz.

Having said that I am still using it, currently in the UK and previously in France, Italy, Spain, NZ and Oz and have not upgraded the maps which results in minor off piste excursions!

I have had bad experiences with hired Garmin device in France and Denmark, going round in circles in the countryside.

One thing to check is which Operating Systems are supported. Navman could not use iOS

Have a look at "Waze". Its a free app that uses fellow users to determine road congestion. I use it here (Germany) and in France. It works well.

Used it yesterday in Paris (not in a Morgan) and performed very well, reminded me of the mini bus working its way through Turin in the Italian Job.

Works equally well in the Morgan, where i connect the iPhone by USB to the radio. Turn instruction then get broadcast via the car speakers.

Agreed - well, concerning France. I bought a Garmin after reading good reviews. Very disappointing.

I have a couple of TomToms and a Garmin. The tom-tom seems to work in a much more intuitive way than the garmin. On the other hand, the Garmin seems much more adaptable and better set up for adding cartography of more obscure places (for example, on my recent trip to Barbados it was very simple to download the map for the island; with the tomtom it just wasn't possible).

I have not used Tom Tom so can only comment on Garmin,
I have used a Garmin 3490 in the Morgan for 5 trips around Europe in the last 5 years visiting 6 different countries on average each trip and always found it accurate getting us exactly where we needed to be.

There are some free apps available now..

I have trialled 'maps.me' with routing. You can download all the maps and they all seem to share the latest 'Open Street Map' data which is crowd sourced and now taking over from official mapping. Download the country you need whilst you have connection and then use it without the need for data connection..maps are always updated.

Other ones I have been told about are 'navmii' and 'Be-on-road'

I would use these in Morgan but my TomTom still performs and does allow me to load up an itinerary (specific routing) from PC software called 'Tyre'. Unfortunately the other listed Apps don't allow that (at the moment anyhow).

I've been very pleased with my Garmin Nuvi.
