Perhaps they see it as the starting point for a track day car. If so there should be tuning options available as a factory delivered package.

I know what you mean Steve and I do agree if potential new owners are hoodwinked into thinking they are getting a basic car with a windscreen, hood and sidescreens for 29K

(I'm chuckling even thinking about this as a type)

And I would hate to be the salesperson that tells someone that their stretched budget of £30K will have to be stretched by another £5K so that you can comfortably drive forward at a speed of more 15MPH, and when its not raining, and when its not anything other than a slight breeze!


(still laughing at the thought as I type)

But, if the potential buyer knows all this before making the inquiry and/or has not run off to cry in disappointment (or laughter), the idea of a stripped down 4/4 has quite got my imagination going

In fact, I'm ordering one in my head now so I will not have to pay a penny over £29K and get the best looking 4/4 for very most basic spec

it would be:

Sport black with brown leather interior

because

The black painted dash looks nice with the brown leather and the chrome rimmed dials

it would have the silver wire wheels and silver grille as they are both non cost options and the silver would look good against the black

So upon receiving my £29K 4/4 I would:

swap out the steering wheel for a nice brown wood rimmed Moto lita

£150

fit Areo Screens to the position just behind where the windscreen would go (have been if I spent another £5K), just in case I fit a windscreen later down the line

£400

order a nice three zip black PVC tonneau cover from a trimmer to keep as much rain out of the cabin as much as possible and fit the little fastenings on the body

Estimate £400

Buy some large nice vintage looking goggles

£50

a black rain driving cape -or have one made by my tailor

estimate £200

totaling approx £30,500

And then i'd have lots of fun

Sadly i don't think Rachel would join me but I know lots a friends who would love wearing the goggles

Also might have the exhaust altered to make it noisy

At first I thought this was a daft idea - but am changing my mind.

Its good to have a low starting price and as is being said for a few extra 00.s you could have a fun car (Caterham anyone?).

Possibly appeal to a younger market too?!

OR the dealers can trade up the Customer/victim to suit their ££pocket.

What was the entry level b4?? £38K??

I think it's a cracking idea. Most Morgans are bought as fine-weather toys anyway, so why make the customer pay for a hood and windscreen if they aren't needed?

A set of Brooklands Aeroscreens (72 quid each from SVC), a 5 quid golf umbrella, a pair of cheap goggles for a tenner and you're sorted.

It's not like you couldn't save up a bit more and have the fripperies fitted later if you want.

I think there are as many viewpoints on this as there are potential customers. Personally, I don't see it as disingenuous.

I never use my roof or side screens, so to me INCLUDING these is a waste of money. If I could buy the screen pillars and glass (which I am not brave enough to do without) and wipers as aftermarket parts for less than the £4,725 I could have saved on the overall cost of my 4/4 then I would have been better off (or had a bigger budget to spend on Aero Racing goodies...).

I'm trawling back through my fallible memory but I seem to recall that they were considering an entry level Speedster for each model, so this may be it.
Below poverty spec, obviously. Remember that the MGA and MGB's had a long list of extras, including the heater which wasn't standard until the mid sixties, when buyers went soft.
So MMC could drop the heater from the standard list and cut the price a bit more. It's Heritage you know.

I quite like the 70 Anniversary 4/4s, especially the pressed steel wheels. This one is based on a 1954 specification.
