Some rather interesting history in the Wikipedia entry. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right-_and_left-hand_trafficActually I don't give a tinker's which side we drive on, I just think that there should have been a world standard. You need to scroll down to find the history section.

I quite like the fact that there is no global standard, it makes going abroad more interesting! The Wikipedia article is extensive and a very good read with some interesting little facts. For instance, the United States Virgin Islands is the only territory under American jurisdiction that drives on the left (it is a former Danish colony). However despite this almost all its cars are imported from the States and are therefore left-hand drive. It is a popular holiday destination for Americans which accounts for its rather high accident rate! Sweden changed to driving on the right in 1967, Iceland in 1968 and the most recent right-to-left switch was Burmah in 1970. Conversely, Samoa swapped to left-hand driving in 2008 and Rwanda and Burandi are debating the same change. The tide is turning!! ~iw

I am intrigued as to the reason why a country might debate/ implement changing sides r the road. It's pretty dramatic & expensive to implement.

It's interesting that French cars up until the 1930's were in the main right hand drive....or so it seemed.

The cricket commentator Brian Johnston used to say that in all his many visits to India he had never been able to work out which side of the road they drive on!
A diplomat friend of mine once told me a story about a newly arrived colleague at the high commission in Delhi. Frustrated by his his driver's lack of lane discipline, he asked him "For goodness sake man !!! what do you think the lines on the road are for ? " To which his driver replied (in all sincerity) "I don't know sahib. It is something you British have left....."

I should value opinions. I have acquired a LHD Frogeye from the colonies as a restoration project. Should I leave it as built or convert to RHD? The finished car is for Mrs. Norfolk Phil to tootle around in. Change to rhd. On a car as gutless as a froggy in current UK traffic , it would be dangerous to have LHD and try overtaking anything other than a milk float.

Hi Howard, a little bit harsh but you're absolutely correct. I will give some thought to enhancing performance too. Regards Phil

Jesus! I suppose the weight of the engine will keep it planted on the road.
