Questions about anti-freeze in August, is he mad? there’s nothing like being prepared. The anti-freeze needs topping up, it is level with the minimum line on the header tank, but the fluid is now 5 years old. Does anti-freeze have a life, should I drain and replace or top-up? Where are the best drain points? Looking on the internet I didn’t realise there were so many different types of anti-freeze, what type is recommended?

The antifreeze itself does not degrade in that it will still not freeze at the temperatures advised re concentration.

The problem is that the anti corrosion additives stop working after a time.

The latest cars say up to 10 years old have about a 10 year antifreeze lifespan. Check that, as some makers have only used the advanced mixes and seals that work with these mixes for less years than that.

If it says nothing in your handbook I would use one of the 5 year mixes similar to Comma G30 or the equivalent Halfords product.

Again if your hand book does not give an antifreeze lifespan, I would drain, refill with water, run the engine up to temperature, drain again and refill with the antifreeze recommended by your supplier with an antifreeze content at 50% to 60% concentration or use an already diluted product.

What colour is it?

Pink or red, pretty safe bet it's a OAT type antifreeze with a five year lifetime.

Green or blue, usually conventional with a two to three year life.

OAT ones are not added to any car with yellow metal - ie brass or copper in the system so I'd not put it past Morgan not being very up to date here.

Thanks for the replies, a little research has answered my questions. For anyone interested, the anti freeze is Motorcraft Super Plus available from Ford dealers / parts suppliers, part number 1336799. Ford recommend replacing after 10 years and the colour is orange. Mix ratio 50:50.
