Can anyone advise how I can make my 4/4 1.8 blacktop zetec exhaust note sound more like a sports car and less like a Ford Focus? I don't want to go to the expense of a Librands sports exhaust system but would like a bit more of a roar! Thanks

You could get a K&N induction filter that gives you a bit more induction noise

I'm not sure what the exhaust system on the black top is exactly as mines the silver top but if it has a rear muffler as mine did you could get that removed and a straight pipe welded on instead

Have a look at Melvyn Rutters sports silencers.....a lot cheaper than Librands and nicely made. I fitted them to my Roadster and it's given it a much deeper exhaust note.

Just change the silencer. Get on to EBay and see what is there. I've just 'won' a Caterham repackable side exit, for my CSR, for £150 plus P&P, normal new price is over £500!

You may have to get someone to do a bit of welding, but it shouldn't be too expensive, then when you sell, just replace the original.

Satisfaction guaranteed.

The problem with the Blactop Zetec is that it's got a very restrictive manifold with the cat right next to the engine which restricts power and makes it very quiet, fine for a focus but not ideal for a sports car. The silver top has a more conventional set up and produces a bit more power as standard.
Changing the silencer for a less restrictive one will increase noise but won't do much for the power. To achieve that you need a new manifold and cat which is why the Librands system is the price it is.
My last car was a Blacktop and I replaced the standard system with the full Librands setup which does make a noticeable difference.

Hi, There is a place in Leeds that custom makes exhausts/silencers in stainless steel, reasonable prices, I had the tailpipes/silencers removed from my Aero 8 and a new piece of stainless pipe instead terminating in a pair of twin large tailpipes, lovely sound without being too loud and very reasonably priced (£395 all in).
pm me if you want the address.

I have a Rutter Sports exhaust system on my 4/4 Sigma - it gives a nice deep sonorous note - but without being too loud on a long run.

Drill a few holes in he exhaust, worked for me and a mate on a Mk 1 Cortina in the early 70's hide

Throw the silencer, replace with a length of stainless pipe, and a FISH tail.

.+8 Now gone for a 1800 4/4. Duratec in bright yellow.
