Good morning Talk Morgan. My first post, inspired by Peter J's comments concerning the latest Plus 8. I think we must be driving different cars Peter. Mine is six weeks old and could not be described by any stretch of the imagination as a touring car. A touring car by definition is a fast effortless quiet, mile munching machine, one where your best girl looks as good when arriving at Cannes as she did at Dover port, with luggage to spare. My car displays more of the characteristics of a spitfire , hit in the engine, staggering home snarling and spitting. It's a muscle car, pure and simple but wearing a pretty dress. It can out drag most Cobra's, and leave anything with similar aerodynamic characteristics for dead. My wonderfully pointless radio is great for when you are parked up, but by then I'm so deafened by the side pipes that I can't hear a blessed thing. My car is manual, It fits the genre, the clutch in fact is progressive and weighted to a 380 hp engine. The BMW gearbox is cracking with two finger changes as precise as my GT3. There is a very wide gap between the clutch and brake which allows a straight legged resting place for my size 12's. Best car I've had..... period. Cheers JC PS Met some brilliant blokes since tipping up at Morgan events.

Yes, the manual box is quite slow between first and second but otherwise pretty good and feels nice in use.
The clutch is great and I find it smooth and easy to use, but a little working out of leg and foot action for the pedal layout is necessary. I find the manual very relaxing on a long drive for an open car!
And the downsides of the auto - lots of creep, the slowness of changes in some circs, and the slur when changing gear don't appeal to me. I also find the knob too far forward and the +/- of the non paddle is the wrong way round for my brain (and other cars I have driven).
Horses for courses.
I also find the Plus 8 feels more of a sports car than the Aero - possibly caused by the extra wind round the screen and the lower doors, and love the way it feels, but for me it is a manual every time although if the auto was a double clutch and avoided the creep and had better changes I would easily be converted as these boxes are simply much better!! (My Scirocco was very jerky off the line though!)

Best car I've had..... period. Cheers JC Morning JC, glad to see that you've joined the party! Good to meet you in Brighton and shame you can't make this Saturday. Love the post and agree that the Plus 8 is not a touring car, much more of a point and squirt machine. Do let me know about the 19/20th September, you can PM me. Would be good if you could make it and bring the Plus 8 count to 4. P.S. Mine's an auto, but the flappy paddles do improve the auto imho

I know how you feel BB. My daily driver is a manual 2007 Audi RS4 Avante in which I've clocked up 265000km. I drive about 45000km a year mostly on the open road. 420hp through a manual box into 4wd is a pleasure to behold :-) The replacement model is tiptronic/auto only. When mine eventually dies I may well go for the same year with as few km's as I can find. I've had a couple of tiptronics but prefer a clutch and a stick. As said 90% of my driving is open highway. If I was city bound I might have a different view.
Yes Jays, I can almost taste it ..... yes, Philip, my former daily was a BMW X5 ...i preferred a new X5 after 250k kilometers but no more availeble in manual...also been looking for the same with less miles...no luck,so i came out at a new 530...the last one the worst i had was a Viper SRT10 truck with Roe Racing blower... +600HP... at 6000 revs you couldn't shift anymore , had to do it around 5000

I like my passengers to emerge with their hair all over the place and their expressions fixed in a blend of terror and exhilaration. A bit like my wife wakes up in the morning. Great to meet you in Brighton - loved your car.

I drive about 45000km a year mostly on the open road. How on earth do you clock up 45K a year in NZ? Do youever get out of the car? You must be up and down the length of both islands. I think your user name should be YoYo.

My office is 100km away from where i live and I go there 3 times a week. I'm an accountant with clients scattered through the upper North Island and I try to visit them as much as I can (lots of farmers). My beach house is 200km away and I go there at least once a month, more in summer. Once again I sometime fly but 800km a week isn't hard. Some clients and trips to the beach I use the plane but it needs settled weather. I like driving and I can time my trips to avoid traffic. Usually listen to a business news bulletin on the way home.
(Sorry for thread drift)
