My 1990 Plus 4 stopped suddenly yesterday and it seems that the fuel pump is not working. It's located in front of the tank on a horizontal steel plate that is fixed to the chassis; it's easy to access the pump by lifting the rear timber shelf.

As far as I can see it's not maintainable. Possibly an electronic device? It's got an inflow pipe from the tank and a slightly smaller outflow pipe heading off towards the front. There are two electrical connections (spade connectors).

Has anyone else encountered a pump problem, do you know the manufacturer and model number and perhaps most importantly where do I go for a replacement?

I would be grateful for all help and advice.

Melvyn Rutter carries fuel pumps for around £288. Relays are easily obtainable. Does the pump prime or is it silent?

Check the relays on the bulkhead
One of them is for the fuel pump- they do go wrong....

Can you not use another type of pump? A Facet cylinder type.?

If the pump is by the fuel tank it's a pusher type, which are pretty easy to get hold off. The big question is what flow rate and pressure is required? If it's got carbs, then you need a low pressure type, but if it's injection, then it's going to depend on the injection system.

What engine has it got in it? If you look at the Burton Power website, they have loads of fuel pumps for both carb and injection engines, in the £30 - £130 range.

Simon is right. A pound to a penny it is the fuel pump relay , check that first before spending any money on pumps.

Easy to check , does the fuel pump "whine" when you switch on , if it doesn't it is almost certainly the relay.
If the fuel pump does "whine" on ignition then it is possibly the pump, but there are other causes. Not sure if the set up on this engine has a pressure relief valve, but if it does then this can be a source of problems.

I don't think even a Rover engine knows what sort of pump is feeding it, Graham. so long as it's getting the right volume at the right pressure, I can't see that it would be bothered if a pump from a Ford supplier was used

But for authenticity, I guess Rimmer Brothers would have the right one, although I suspect that it's an aftermarket pump anyway as I think the Rover 800 series used an in-tank pump. Is it the single point or mulitpoint injection engine?

I had problems with my fuel pump and was advised to get a Bosch pump 0580464070. Price £112.10 on the internet. They are better made than the Jaguar pump that was used.

There are pumps on E-Bay starting at £25 but most are made in China and are not very well made.

I would defintely look at the pump relay first. I recently had the relay fail on my 92 plus 4 with M16 engine. Look just above the clutch pedal and you will see two relays. The left being the fuel relay. The wording on top of relay was BOSCH 0332014 112
12 V 304. I put the Bosch number into google and hey presto bought two for £26 - the spare going into the glove box.
