I have a problem with the handbrake on my 1938 Series 1 4/4 - it applies its self each time I use the food brake. The system works on a (new)common cable with the foot brake with the handbrake connection "fixed" to the cable. I'm at a loss to see how the footbrake can work with this setup without applying the hand brake at the same time. Your help urgently required. Many thanks in anticipation

Does the handbrake lock in when you push the footbrake?

My 1947 4/4 Cable brakes just twitches a bit doesnt come on.
its just a question of perpetual adjustment I guess.

Hello and thank you for your reply. Yes, the handbrake locks on the serrated quadrant when the foot brake is applied

Thank you Chris. This could be the answer but to adjust the cable, I have too remove the handbrake as the cable connetor at the base of the handbrake lever is a fixed fitting on the cable and doesn't rotate individually

This could be why the world went over to hydraulics !

Yes Chris. You could well be right. It seem strange that some lesser (non-sports)cars were fitted with full hydraulic braking systems well before Morgan adopted them and could still market their product very competitive, and often cheaper prices

Even Rolls Royce used mechanically operated rear brakes until 1955.

A 30's had mechanical rears, and possibly A35's.

Thanks Guys. Great info but we are drifting a little from the core of the original message. If anyone has experience of the handbrake of early series 1 4/4's applying itself everytime the footbrake is pressed, I would appreciate input of their solution to the problem
