This one was kept quiet. In the September Miscellany there are details of a new automatic Plus 4 using the Mazda MX5 automatic gearbox. According to the information the 0-60 acceleration is 1.2 seconds quicker than standard which I think owes more to the conservatively stated figure of the standard car rather than any miracle of engineering. Not for me, yet, but I am sure will be of interest to a number of potential Morgan owners.

Phil Ledgerwood built one to special order a year or two ago. It was a new part built car which was brought up north, modified then finished off at the factory. Apparently it was a challenge.

I understand an automatic became necessary following Morgan's move into the far eastern market. A significant number of potential customers backed off when they learnt that traditionals were only available in manual form.

I guess if you live in a city it might make ownership more pleasurable. Certainly, for dicing with the Arabs up the Kings Road, I think I would go for it. Reg

What about a sequential gearbox option ? That would be most welcome and they are already fitted to some caterhams with duratecs .

Going for a sportscar with an automatic gearbox the Boxter would be a far better option than a Plus4. With the present route of development Traditionals will end up as an average car with poor quality and a reference to historic design. The Morgan spirit of the trads will disappear and whats left at the end? Not my cup of tea.
