Hi
Could you give me the Chassis number of your 1938 two seater please?
I did read of a 1938 that was for sale a year ago that the factory had re-engined from the CC to the Standard Specialin 1939. It is this sort of change plus the odd engine that Morgan thrashed to death "testing" that could account for the total 40 Standard Special engines supplied.
We have also found #930 that was factory built out of "secondhand" parts, including a Standard Special engine, and delivery after the war.

Hi
I thought I had posted a reply but must have got lost!
Can you please give me your chassis number as I see several 1938 two seaters that went back to the factory and I saw one for sale about a year ago that had been factory re-engined from the CC to the Standard Special in 1939

Kerry, yes a bit of trick question. What I got from Ken Hill a few years back is that (as you see in your notes) 600 and 500 are the same car, the Avon Coupe. H. St Leger Skinner is HFS' son in law. Married Stella, Peter's sister. It was given (supposedly as a wedding gift) or sold to them as used to get it off the books, off inventory, in effect a tax dodge. I have a photo of Stella circa 1939 sitting beside the Coupe.
Cheers,
Mark

Kerry, another trick question. Where are you in NZ. I visited a few times and met some Morgan folks in Paraparaumu, a few years back.
Cheers,
Mark

Hi Cyril That's what I need but bear in mind that the records are in "old fashioned" typed script so I cannot just do a search!
682 4/4 SIRDSTR ENG: MA 794 GBX: 10772 RED EXT & BLACK INT. DISP: 26 OCT 1938 DEST: U.K. CONDITION: UNTRACED AGENT: J. Coryton Ltd, South Kensington OPTIONS: RHD. Aluminium spoked disc wheels NOTES: Petrol pump 6e-61435
I did see that J. Coryton ltd had returned a car in 1939 to be re-engined - will look into it more.
BUT Q 05 E appears to be fitted to chassis # 853 a 4/4 DHC supplied directly (unusual) to a Mr. W.J.C. Kendall and was one of the first DHC fitted with a Standard Special engine. My GUESS this is just another of Morgan's inhouse moves!
I must say looking at the records are the cars factory built out of secondhand parts and cars where the gearbox has been changed and the old gearbox serviced and put back into stock. Some of our prized possessions could well be a factory bitsers!

Hi Mark I live in Katikati in the Bay of Plenty - about a 2 hour drive south of Auckland.
Can you recall who the Morgan folk living in Paraparaumu were? As the Registrar I have all the names and addresses of Morgan owners in NZ and the past morgan owners.
We have 9 series 1 two seaters in NZ with 6 on the road.

Thanks Kerry.
I have very little information on this car but while I was working on it today I found some red paintwork which would tie-up with the info you have.
The car is now Brunswick green and George Proudfoot has recently fitted it with a Moss gearbox replacing the bodged and knackered Meadows that was in it when I purchased it.
Currently a running restoration my next task, hopefully, is to tackle a badly worn steering box although I'm not having much luck sourcing another
Many thanks once again for your help
Kind regards Cyril

Cyril, back to Terry Foxen again. I think he does a rebuild service on series 1 steering boxes.
.+8 Now gone for a 1800 4/4. Duratec in bright yellow.

Kerry, I didn't get that far north I'm afraid. I spent a wonderful day with Murray Hislop and Allen Freeman though. Murray had a white Plus 4 4 Seater. He met me in the car when my train arrived from Wellington. We visited a car museum and the went by Allen's house. Allen had pictures of racing his Flat Rad Plus 4 4 Seater in the 50s tacked to his wall, and the very same car in his garage. A very nice Morgan visit, and they were both very kind to entertain a misplaced American.
Cheers,
Mark
